Simple Christmas on the Coast Home Tour

Fresh greenery, a few shells, and lots of pale blue and white. Welcome to our Simple Christmas on the Coast Home Tour!

“May your days be merry and bright, and may all your Christmases be white.”

White Christmas – Irving Berlin

Welcome to our Christmas on the Coast Home Tour. We live in Scituate Harbor which is on Boston’s South Shore. I’m honored to be taking part in Krista’s Seasonal Simplicity Home Tour this week. If you’re visiting from The Handmade Home welcome! Isn’t Ashley’s colorful Christmas so fun?!?

This is actually part 2 of our Christmas tour. I shared part 1 the other week. Click here if you missed the first part.

Christmas on the Coast Front Exterior

Snowy cottage decorated for Christmas

Yesterday morning we woke to a blanket of white snow! I have to admit it just makes it seem more Christmas-y and we’re hoping for a White Christmas here. If you look closely you’ll see Max, our little terrier mix rescue, perched high on the couch (his favorite spot to see the neighborhood).

Before we head inside, I have to share this photo of Poppy I took last week:

Front door decorated for Christmas with a black lab sitting on the brick walkway

Isn’t she a sweetheart? Okay, I also recommend listening to The Beach Boys Christmas Album while visiting our home. I have this album playing on repeat while baking and decorating. It always reminds me of Christmas at my grandmother’s house. We’d always play the record when we arrived 😉

Christmas on the Coast Front Hall

Front hallway with dark woodwork decorated for Christmas

As soon as you step inside our home you’re in our front hall. It was on this very spot that I fell madly in love with our home. I love all the dark woodwork and the crystal door knobs on every door.

We gave this space a little refresh last fall which you can see here.

This is the view of the front door from our kitchen doorway:

Interior dark wood front door with snowy wreath

We added the ceiling light and floorcloth last year. The floorcloth makes the space looks bigger and is so easy to clean with kids and dogs!

The wreath is from Balsam Hill. I still need to put batteries in it!

Staircase with Christmas garland hung low

We have a collection of umbrellas ready for inclement weather and absolutely adore the umbrella holder my mom gave me last year. The framed photograph is a vintage photo of our home from the 1960s!

I decided to run my garland lower this year as it always gets in the way of the hand rail otherwise. I was inspired by my friend Sandra over at Old Silvershed’s garland last year and a photo from the CB2 catalog.

How to Create a Low Garland for a Small Staircase

To create this garland I secured a faux garland with some pine cones attached.

Dark wood staircase with simple garland

I inserted some snowy faux branches:

But also used real boxwood I clipped from our bushes and eucalyptus branches from Trader Joe’s. I also used soft seagrass fronds from our back yard (by the pool). I love the whimsy they bring against the greenery.

I also tucked in faux white hydrangeas and a white poinsettia.

It’s very simple and highlights the beautiful woodwork on our stairs.

(through that window is our sunroom, but we’ll get there in a little bit)

Opposite the stairs is a marble topped dresser where we store our hats, gloves, and scarves.

I got those giant pine cones last year and still love them!

I filled a simple Ikea vase with eucalyptus and seagrass fronds to coordinate with the staircase garland.

Let’s head into the kitchen, the heart of our home!

Christmas on the Coast Kitchen

White kitchen with small table top tree

I like to keep our Christmas decor in here quite simple because we have a smaller kitchen. We don’t have loads of counter space and we really like to bake and cook. If I fill the surface with decor, well, there wouldn’t be any room to cook!

Oh, there’s little Max!

I strung a faux garland in our window and also made a dried orange garland. The boys and I had so much fun drying oranges this year. I will share the tutorial very soon.

A plate of dried oranges

I love how the orange slices look like stained glass in the window:

We’ve made a few updates in this space – painting the cabinets, adding new hardware, and using stick on subway tile on our backsplash. I dream of doing our kitchen over one day but we need to move plumbing and gas so need to save up.

I know many of you like our little kitchen as it is. I am grateful for having this space to cook with our family.

Small island with Christmas cookies, pine tree, candle, dried oranges, wooden bowls and an advent calendar

Our little island is from Ikea and is the perfect size for this small kitchen. I have some Christmas cookies, this wonderful pine scented candle and a faux tree that was from Ikea years and years ago. The wooden nesting bowls are olive wood and from Trader Joe’s.

The boys are loving this Bonne Maman Advent Calendar with beautiful illustrations by Riley Sheehey. Each morning they have a new pot of jam for toast!

We’ve already been cooking up a storm. I shared our gingerbread house cakes over the weekend. For Christmas, we plan on making these and also doing an Italian feast – meatballs, cutlets, and stuffed shells! My kids love Italian.

Here’s a glimpse of the other part of our kitchen:

Kitchen counter with rose wine and a candle, carved wooden fish hanging on the gray wall

That carved fish was a lucky find at a consignment shop. Isn’t it great? You can see into our dining room which is decked out for Christmas. You can see more of that here and here.

The peninsula is perfect spot to sip some wine while dinner is cooking or enjoy coffee in the morning. Our bar stools are indestructible.

Let’s head to the sunroom now. It’s just out our back door :

Christmas on the Coast Sunroom

This is a three season room but we still get warm enough days to enjoy this space in winter.

The flocked tree was from Lowe’s a few years ago. I love the warm white lights and have decorated it simply with French Country Ornaments from Balsam Hill and a few wooden ornaments.

I love flocked trees and sparkly ornaments.

The furniture in this room is a mix of vintage and new. The pedestal table is wonderful. I love to do crafts here and to paint watercolors in the summer. I have a little online shop with my son if you want to our art. The arm chairs are from Ikea. We completely did this room a few years ago, click here, and I shared my tips for painting the floor here. You can read more about the mid century chairs here.

Let’s head outside to the pool house, our last stop.

Here’s what our yard looks like in the snow:

Snowy yard

We still need to bring in our outdoor furniture, but plan on using the firepit and the adirondacks through the winter.

If you’d like to see what the yard looks like in summer with the pool open click here. We installed the pool three years ago and Luke and I did all the landscaping ourselves which was A LOT of work. If you’re thinking of installing a pool here are my tips!

Christmas on the Coast Shed

Blue shed door with a snowy wreath

The pool house doors and shutters coordinate with our home. They are painted in Buxton Blue by Benjamin More in high gloss. I get asked all the time 😉

This was my little she shed which we turned into a pool house. Since we use this space as storage in the winter I don’t decorate it for Christmas, but you can see a rendition I did one year here.

I love your kitchen and so enjoyed the blogs on the ginger bread houses!
One reason bloggers don’t comments is they do not reply. Communication goes two ways. Thanks for sharing hand I am waiting for your next blog. Ha! Ha!

I still have the driftwood tree that I bought from you probably 7 or 8 years ago! I kept it on the window shelf in our pantry while we lived in Colorado to remind me of beautiful Scituate, and now that we are back in MA, it is on a shelf in our living room! xx

Oh my goodness, your snow is soo beautiful Danielle! And your tour was so perfect. Just the right amount of soft and subtle seasonal touches!

(and I’m in LOVE with your urns on your front porch! Beware, they may disappear one day! ;))

Merry Christmas to you!

Danielle I always look forward to your Christmas home tour…both inside and out! I love all of your beautiful light blue and coastal touches. I am dying over the advent calendar with the jelly! That is my husband’s favorite jell. I might have to splurge and get it for him next year! Merry Christmas!

Your home is so inviting. You’ve mixed coastal style with wintry touches so beautifully. Love the stair garland at the treads instead of the handrail. And your shed is so cute!
