Shimmering Christmas Living Room

This year I’m embracing all that glitters and shimmers. My childhood heart would be so happy because we have tinsel on the tree! I’m excited to share our shimmering Christmas Living Room with you!

Neutral living room with dark woodwork decorated for Christmas

This year has been such a busy, busy year. It’s brought some amazing times but also hard times – sickness, injuries, illness, and whilst I don’t want to focus on the bad, I’m going into the holidays grateful but a bit more tired this year. For that reason, I wanted to keep our spaces simple and elegant. Home, for me, is a place to relax and recharge. I’m excited to share a bit of shimmer and comfort in our living room.

The other week I shared our dining room. You can read about our blue and white Christmas dining room here.

New Additions in the Living Room

Most things have stayed the same in here except one BIG change – the sectional! I plan on writing a much longer post about our new sectional after the holidays. We went with the Kivik from Ikea. Our old white slipcovered sectional was well-loved by all of us (and most especially Max). It was time for a replacement.

Neutral sectional and white oak table

I’m in LOVE with the arms and think it works really nicely with the beautiful white oak coffee table Luke built me. I kept things simple with pillows we already had – white linen from Ikea and faux fur from HomeGoods.

These ottomans are wonderful and we use them in both areas of our living room.

I filled an old Ironstone bowl with potpourri. It has a scent of apples and cinnamon.

Apple and pine cone potpourri

Our tree is shimmering in the background. It’s a Balsam Hill Tree, you can read more about it here, but we added some warmer white lights this year. I’m craving light and sparkle this Christmas so we decorated it with mini disco balls, mercury glass ornaments, and some other ornaments we already had. I’m really excited about adding tinsel this year and I’ll reuse it in the years to come!

Simple Holiday Styling

In addition to the the festive potpourri, I added shimmering ornaments in a giant clamshell. Over the years I’ve used this shell to put drinks in, for plants, and to display fishing floats. It’s so versatile!

Antique burled walnut dresser with Frame TV

This antique cabinet houses our DVD player and collection of DVDs. Above the shell hangs our Frame TV. I shared more about the Frame TV in this post. I love that it looks like art when you’re not watching TV. We have our Frame TV on an arm that can swing out from the wall.

Luke actually took that photo on a beautiful trip to Martha’s Vineyard we took with the boys a few years ago. I love it so much, I just leave it up!

Here’s a closer look at the shell:

I filled it with French Country Ornaments from Balsam Hill.

Next to the couch is our bar cart. I just added a few of these baubbles and a very realistic tree we got from Ikea probably 10 years ago.

The fish print is by my friend Jeanne Stewart, who grew up in this home. You can read more about the fish print here.

Christmas Mantel

Here’s a peek at the mantel:

Original wood mantel decorated for Christmas

We redid our fireplace a few years ago and we are so happy did. We kept the original wood mantel but added fossilized ocean floor, bluestone hearth, and such a realistic gas insert. It’s so warm and cozy by the fire. Read more about our fireplace here.

I wanted to keep the mantel super simple. I used realistic looking garlands (I used two) and looped string lights around them. I scattered the same country ornaments and used my ironstone to add height. The white trees were from Target probably 7 years ago and the ice skates are new – a gift from my mom. I loved ice skating when I was younger. I have great memories of skating on frozen ponds with my dad and going for tomato soup after.

Our little dog enjoying the Christmas decor

In this part of the room we have a very comfy leather couch, carved coffee table, and another oriental rug. Max loves lounging on both couches (as you can see).

Shimmering Living Room at Night

It looks so magical in here at night so I thought I’d share a few glowing photos:

The sparkle of the tree makes my heart happy.

The mantel has that same glow and the warmth of the fire is lovely curled up with a book.

We start our mornings here too!

In my book….EVERY tree needs tinsel!!! I use it every year and yes, I reuse it. It is getting harder to find. It is ALL about the glitter and glow! This is the best tree you’ve ever set up. I am curious, are those radiators how you get the house heated? LOVE ’em!!! Even if they don’t work, I would keep them…so vintage charm! Sadly so many took them out over the years. Luke’s photo on the TV screen is Wonderful!!! I also like the two sofas back to back. Your room is so long and I like the way… Read more »

Hi Danielle! Your home in the harbor is so beautiful, warm and cozy. I have not gone the tinsel route but I do love it. It’s so nostalgic. All of you and Luke’s talent shine through in your beautiful living room. I love the tv screen photo. How cool to be able to use a photo Luke took. Merry Christmas to you and your family. I won’t be “home” for the holidays.
