Rustic Spring Planter

Ah, I’m so happy you enjoyed our Spring Home Tour yesterday.  Thank you so much for all kind comments. Today, I wanted to share how we made this rustic spring planter! It has brought so much joy to our living room.

You actually might recognize the industrial crate as I’ve used it for other things.  I actually bought it from my friend, Nancy, at the Sea Rose Cottage.  This is a vintage factory crate and I love the stenciled numbers on the side. I’m not sure what it was used for, but I like to display items in it – fish floats, dried hydrangeas, and I thought it would be fun to plant flowers in it for spring!

The first thing I did with it when I got it home was wash it down and I put felt pads on the bottom, so it wouldn’t scratch any surfaces.

Turning this into a planter was quite easy. Wanna see what we did?

How to Make A Rustic Spring Planter

Materials

• Industrial Crate – you can find them on Etsy or at antique markets
• Spring Bulbs – I used tulip, hyacinth and daffodils
• Plastic Tubs – I found mine at the Dollar Tree
• Potting Soil
• Watering Can
• Preserved Moss

Method

Step 1 – Place your plastic tubs in your crate to measure how high they can be.  Since I was putting this on my coffee table I didn’t want watering seeping out from the plants when I watered.

Step 2 – Take a box cutter and carefully cut your plastic tubs. Place them in the industrial crate.

Step 3 – Transplant flowers of your choice in the crate and use extra soil to padded them out for support.  I actually left the hyacinth it it’s pot and put a plastic saucer underneath.

Step 4 – Water your thirsty plants.

Step 5 – Place preserved moss on top of your planter to hide the plastic containers.

That’s it! Now you can enjoy a beautiful rustic spring planter!

It looks so pretty and festive for spring. I took these photos on Monday (which also happened to be a snow day). Conor set up Clue right in front of the table so I had to crop these images a little.
