A She Shed with Home Depot: Inspiration

This post is sponsored by The Home Depot.

Okay, grab your coffee because I have some really, really exciting news.

Really exciting….

The kind of news you have to sit down for…

I told you the other day, that we had to cut the trees down for a reason and now I can tell you.

I’m teaming up with my friends at Home Depot to create a She Shed in our yard!

Things can get a little crazy and zany around here with two active boys and a dog.  Sometimes the house is messier than I’d like or louder than I’d like so I’m absolutely over the moon for the chance to create my own coastal oasis in our backyard.  A place just for me to retreat.  A place to write.  A place to create.  I’ll share my design inspiration but first I wanted to share the shed installation, which was very exciting for our whole family.

I decided on the Horizon Shed by Sheds USA. The shed is 8 x 12 with a gambrel roof.  My desire is to create a She Shed that goes with our historic home.  The roof lines are the same and the colors will be too.

I am so impressed by all of the sheds made by Sheds USA.  Great quality materials, solid tough floor, and lovely design.

Here’s how our shed arrived:

In flat panels ready to be installed.  Luke and I marked where we wanted the shed to be positioned with little flags and the installers did the rest!

Conor helped, of course!

He’s excited to help with all the planting too.

Renaldo and Junior carried the solid panels through our moon gate to the position.

The installation was quick and easy!

First leveling and construction of the floor:

We opted for the tough floor upgrade which is 200% stronger and insect and moisture resistant.

Then the walls:

Then the roof:

David put together the whale weathervane from Home Depot.

It has that classic New England look.  Don’t you love the aged copper patina?

They even installed it for me.

The whole shed was put together in under two hours!  Amazing!

A big thank you to David, Renaldo and Junior (and Conor) for all their help.

Now, you may be wondering what my plans are for this shed.  Well, I’m so glad you asked!

If you’ve been following the blog for a long time then you know my style is coastal with a historic twist.  Our home is a 1927 dutch colonial, I shared a few exterior images the other day, click here.

Our Seaside Home

Hydrangeas and the side of our home

So the exterior of the shed is going to have a similar look to our home.  I opted for dark gray siding and a black roof with white trim.

The doors, window boxes and shutters are all cedar.  The window boxes will be painted white and the doors and shutters will be painted a beautiful blue to match our homes door and shutters.

The window boxes will be filled with gorgeous summer flowers and trailing vines.  A trellis with a climbing rose, similar to homes on Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, will be on the side.  We will also be doing a gravel patio with a seating area (updating an old cafe set with spray paint) and finishing off the outside with coastal plants – hydrangeas, sea grasses and roses.

The plants will be similar to our back deck, but more romantic:

Now for the inside. The inside will be completely and totally inspired by the sea.  We love our coastal town and long days at the beach. You may remember I did our sunroom in a coastal style:

I plan on a similar look for the interior of the shed.

Here’s how the shed looks inside now:

The walls will be covered in shiplap and painted a beautiful white, Polar Bear White by Behr.  The floors will be stained a transparent gray and a coastal striped rug will ground the room.  We’ll be doing white bead board on the ceiling.

Here’s what I’m thinking:

OB-Coastal Inspiration Room

The rug that I’m using is more light blue/ turquoise stripes with white.  There will be high gloss stools that can double as side tables, a woven couch with white cushions and a coffee table we’re building. All DIY materials and furniture will be sourced from The Home Depot.  The color palette will be white, grays, and tans with a few punctuations of blue (my favorite color).  Succulents, air plants and other greenery will bring life to the room.

Texture will come in the form of high gloss stools, canvas letters, sea shells from the beach, driftwood and antique charts.

Sometimes I can’t go as nautical as I’d like to in our home due to the dark woodwork, but this shed is going to be a coastal oasis.  Think light, bright and airy.

I’m so excited for you to see what we do and more importantly spend time out here:

I have a feeling it is going to be hard keeping two little boys out of this space once it is done.

Stay tuned for the reveal in August once we get back from Spain!  I’m so excited.

Hi Danielle!
I love your plans for the shed! I’ve always wanted my own “she-shed”! Being a fellow New Englander, I’m curious as to what your plans are for the shed in the winter. Will you have some sort of heat source out there so you can use it year round?

This is the best thing ever! If Home Depot needs another She- Shed volunteer have them call me! It is a dream of mine…I will be excited to see yours in person at our cookout in August Danielle. I am sure it is going to be gorgeous.

What a great project to be involved in! I have wanted a little play house/hide away for years! Such a fun idea! I saw one on Pinterest one time that even had a napping loft in it! So cool! Have fun with yours and I’m looking forward to seeing how things progress! Hugs, Leena
