This is a very new drink to us. Luke and I love G & T and Vodka Soda, and I’ve shared many other cocktails here on the blog including Pina Coladas, some Keto ones, and Rhubarb Sparklers BUT was wanting something refreshing but not too sweet. For some reason, Margaritas (even made with lime juice and simple syrup) are giving me headaches and really bad acid.

Anyway, enter the Paloma!

We bought some canned Paloma Cocktails from Board143 in North Scituate and fell in love with them. I’d never heard of a Paloma cocktail before. I was intrigued.

I thought it would be fun to make some from scratch at home.

What is a Paloma Cocktail?

A Tequila based cocktail and is very popular in Mexico. I looked it up to find out more, but no one knows definitely who invented the Paloma which means “Dove”. Some credit the legendary Don Javier Delgado Corona, owner of the beloved La Capilla bar in the aptly-named town of Tequila in Jalisco, Mexico.

The drink in the US is usually made with Fresca but in Mexico it’s mixed with Jarritos. I’ve also seen it made with fresh grapefruit juice online.

Using a Soda Stream

We use our soda stream to create grapefruit soda for this cocktail. A few years ago we invested in a soda stream for making sparking water, soda water and sodas. This is an eco-friendly way to cut down on plastic waste and also try different sodas and sparkling waters. I love the fruit drops for refreshing sparkling water. We also love the Soda Press Co. classic pack which includes the grapefruit soda.

Here’s our easy take on the Paloma.

How to Make Refreshing Paloma Cocktails at Home

Wooden table with bottles of tequila, soda and a slice grapefruit

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup Tequila – We used Casamigos
  • 1/2 cup Grapefruit Soda – We used this one with our Soda Stream
  • Crushed Iced
  • Lime Juice
  • Wedge of Grapefruit
  • Soda Water
Bottle of Casamigos Tequila and a grapefruit sliced open

Method

Fill a glass with crushed ice. Add 1/4 cup tequila, top with 1/2 cup grapefruit soda, a squeeze of lime and top with a splash of soda water. Garnish with a wedge of grapefruit. You can rim the glass with salt if desired, like margarita.

It’s that easy!

We’re enjoying them by the pool but they’d be great on the lake, by the beach, or in your backyard.

This refreshing cocktail has such a wonderful flavor. Pretend your in Mexico with a Paloma cocktail.

I always get asked about sources – find the tray here and the napkins here. Loungers are from Ikea and the planter is from Home Depot.

It’s funny that you discovered the Paloma. We have been watching “Amy Schumer Leans to Cook” and she made a Paloma on one episode. I hadnever heard of them either, but both your recipe and hers look delicious.

We tried these while in Mexico last February and they were so good! So refreshing under the hot Mexican sun and guilt free alternative to the more sugary drinks.
