KIVIK Sectional Reveal

I’m so excited to share our new sectional with you! After much research and debate we decided to go with IKEA’s KIVIK sectional. This post is in no way sponsored by IKEA and plan on giving you an unbiased look at the process of selecting, building, and lounging on this couch!

For some time we’ve known we needed replace our beloved slipcovered sectional. We LOVED that sectional. For those that are new around her or didn’t see our previous couch, I’ll share a photo below:

Coastal Living Room with White Sectional

Our white sectional was by Rowe Furniture and we found it in the clearance room at Boston Interiors. 8 years ago we paid $2k for the couch. We LOVED it. It had hand-tied springs and down wrapped seats so you literally sunk into this couch. We ALL LOVED it, including Max, our little rescue dog.

You can read about the reveal of the white sectional here and my tips for keeping white slipcovers clean. Over the years he’s sat on top of cushions patrolling the neighborhood. This caused some of the cushions to sink and a rip to form in the slipcover. I researched having one made which would be $1700 or getting a second one from the manufacturer which would be another $2K. Since Max will always run along the top of the couch we decided to get a new couch from IKEA, one that we can buy a new section for if needed and a new slipcover for $250.

Shopping IKEA for a New Couch

We did a lot of research and it was really important to find a couch we thought was good value AND was comfortable. We love watching TV and movies in our living room. It really is our hangout room.

John and I headed to Ikea to get some things for his dorm room and to start our couch research. We narrowed it down to two types of couches.

The KIVIK

The first one was the KIVIK. Here’s John testing it out on the shop:

This is the KIVIK with the lounge attachment. The cool thing is that lounger lifts for storage but would have been too big for our room. We felt this was the most comfortable couch at IKEA and really liked the modern arms.

I like how IKEA gives so much information on their signs. The slipcovers for these couches detach and are washable. A must for our home.

HYLTARP

Couch Shopping at Ikea

I really liked the look of the HYLTARP and it was very comfortable too.

On a separate occasion (actually, the day we bought the sectional) we returned to IKEA. Luke went with me this time to just take a look. I shared everything John and I felt and I had him sit in the different couches. The KIVIK was significantly cheaper and we both liked the transitional lines of the couch. We talked to the sales assistant about the possibility of buying a sectional and said they offered delivery too. We explained we still had a couch that we needed to get rid of. We found out IKEA offers couch removal – $25 per section.

So we ordered the KIVIK Sectional, a slipcover, and paid for our old couch to be removed.

IKEA Couch Delivery

The KIVIK couch and slipcover came in a series of flat packed boxes. For a bit of time we had these boxes and the old sectional. When a subcontractor came to take the cold couch away we found they didn’t have enough space in the truck and that someone from IKEA would reschedule. In the meantime, I’d posted how our living room was looking with the boxes and couch on stories and a friend said she wanted our old sectional, that it would be great with her two dogs. Well, I was delighted. I can now visit my beloved white sectional anytime! We moved it out that weekend and Luke began putting together the new sectional. We got a refund on the removal charge the next time we went to IKEA.

Assembly took about 2-3 hours. I’m so glad Luke is good at putting things together…

KIVIK Slipcover

The KIVIK comes with so many slipcover options, 13 but also leather. We went with the Gunnared Beige which is lovely it has speckles of tan, gray, and white in the fabric. Max sheds a lot and you can’t see his white fur on this cover. That’s one reason we can’t go with a dark fabric couch.

Here’s a peek at the slipcover we went with :

Here’s the sectional shortly after Luke built it:

I really love this slipcover and the shape of the sectional in our living room. It feels a bit modern and transitional and I love it with the white oak coffee table Luke built me.

Christmas Came Early!

So you remember some of our Christmas photos with the couch!

I really felt like Christmas came early. I was so excited to have a new couch with everyone back home. We could all fit, even with the moms too. So this couch is pretty roomy.

I loved our tinsel tree with the couch.

The Big Reveal and Thoughts on the Sectional

And here’s how it looks now after a few months of enjoying it:

Neutrals in a Living Room

Whilst our original sectional was more comfortable this new sectional started off very firm and is becoming more and more comfortable as we lounge on it.

For us the value and ability to get a new slipcover when needed (or a new section if the cushions breakdown). I tried to be more practical than before. When we bought the Rowe sofa Max was a puppy and we didn’t know he’d love sitting on top of the cushions.

Warm winter whites

So far a bit of chocolate and red white has gotten on the cover and I was able to get it out with the Tide To Go pen. Both my fault, of course! I haven’t washed the sectional yet but have vacuumed it. This cover is much more forgiving than the white. I will definitely write another post to share how the sectional holds up over time. But this sectional delivered with the slipcover cost us $1800, that’s less than a slipcover for the old sectional.

Ikea in our home

I’m delighgted that we got a new couch that we all enjoy. I love how it looks in our space. I can’t wait to hear what you think.

We have a leather three seat couch in the other part of the living room (near the fireplace) and we’ve put the two couches together back to back. See more how the other part of the room looks here. Max also loves that couch too. Life is too short to get mad about pets. I love that we can all snuggle here together.

I love the look of your new sofa! I have definitely adapted my furniture to accommodate my pets — they are part of the family. How great that you can replace the slipcover or even a section!
