Pool Progress – Digging and Plumbing

Well, a lot has happened on the pool front since I shared our inspiration last week. Today I wanted to give you a pool progress update.

Building a Pool - Finding Silver Pennies

It isn’t every day that you have a digger arrive to your home to dig a giant hole in your yard.

Conor was beyond excited!

When he was younger, he LOVED Bob the Builder, and even dressed up as him for Halloween. So, to see such big equipment building our pool was a dream come true for him. I’ll admit it he wasn’t the only one who was excited. I felt like it was Christmas morning!

I actually made a little video of all the excitement:

I thought you guys might be interested, particularly if you LOVED Bob the Builder, or perhaps you have dreams of putting in a pool, too. You may want to check out my inspiration post, click here.

DAY 1

Here Comes the Digger! Our Pool Construction Day 1 - Finding Silver Pennies
First, the digger scraped off the grass and dug the top soil.

Max & Poppy were mesmerized watching all the excitement.

The day they came was very cold for New England. It still feels like winter here despite what the calendar says.
The next step was framing out the pool. You can see, in the below photo, that they dug a trench for the plumbing and electrical. The crew poured over our plans and measured to make sure everything was exact. This framework will be the pool. So it really was amazing to see the pool take shape before our eyes.
Framing Our Pool - Finding Silver Pennies
Lots and lots of dirt. They will need to grade the yard so this dirt will come in handy later.

Our biggest fear was hitting ledge, or bedrock, that is found in our area. It is very costly to break out ledge and sometimes they have to blast. We did find a rock though.
Hitting Rock in our Pool Construction - Finding Silver Pennies
This granite rock doesn’t look that big next to the digger, but it was huge. Thankfully, the digger was able to get it out of the hole and it was placed to one side so they could finish digging and framing. The rock would be dealt with the next day.

Gravel

Putting in a Gunite Pool - Finding Silver Pennies
Gravel was placed in the pool and they finished up framing.

The top of the surround is where the edge of the pool will be and the yard will be graded to ever so slightly slope away from the pool. The pool itself will be 6 ft in the deep end and 3 ft in the shallow end but they have to dig deeper because of the thickness of the gunite.

Framed Pool

You can see the shape of the pool here. I love it so much and, it now actually feels real and very big.

That night Conor climbed on the rock:

See! It’s a pretty big rock.

Day 2

Day 2 was very exciting as Zach Costello came to break up the rock. Poor Conor would have loved to watch it. This rock was so hard Zach couldn’t break all of it.

Some of the broken rocks will be used when leveling our yard, but we kept a very large piece he couldn’t break. He actually positioned it for us, so we can have someone come and engrave our house number and street on it. We thought that reusing this piece of history would be nice for our home.

Day 3

Day 3 was all about the plumbing. You can’t have a pool without plumbing.

Installing the Plumbing for the Pool - Finding Silver Pennies

We really are so amazed with South Shore Gunite Pools. They’ve been great at communicating with us and everyone is so nice and helpful. We are so surprised at how quickly our pool is coming together before our eyes. All the guys have been sweet to our kids too. When we hit the rock, Brett immediately called Costello Contracting (they’ve been friends since they were little). Brett also lined up someone to move the shed when it comes time.

Next week I’ll be sharing the rebar and the electrical.

So lovely to see it all coming together, My late husband and I had a pool put in our garden when we lived in Australia but now I am back in Kent UK where pools would be hard pushed to be used with our awful weather! Yours is going to be amazing. x

Very fascinating! Although I am sure it is hard to imagine swimming in a pool right now, with the weather we’ve been having in New England! I bet you are looking forward to this Summer!
Very good video you made too.
