Fall ChalkBoard Art and Free Printable (Seasons of Home)
The leaves are starting to change here in New England and the temperatures are higher than normal; we’re having an Indian Summer. Each year we go apple picking. We’ve done this since John was a baby. Local farms have a variety of apples, and sometimes pears, to pick fresh. Many farms also have hayrides, mazes, and my favorite apple cider donuts. We usually spend a fall day apple picking but haven’t gone yet this year. These cherished memories of picking our own apples inspired this little chalkboard art:
Apples always taste best just picked and eaten right in the orchard. Don’t you think?
We made this chalkboard last year for our kitchen following this tutorial from my friend Liz over at Love Grows Wild. I mostly let the kids draw on it and love how their artwork looks in the kitchen.
I do really love nice writing on chalkboards though and I always thought when I was a grown up I’d be able to do this.
Um, no.
This is a bit of an aside, but I always thought I’d have nice writing like my mom and also be able to blow dry my hair straight. I can’t seem to master this yet either – the brush just gets stuck and makes my hair more frizzy.
Anyway, not sure if you have the hair problem.

How to Create this Chalkboard Art
- Print out this printable (it is 8 x 10), click here to download.
- Rub white chalk all over the back of the paper.
- Flip the paper over and line it up how you want it on the chalkboard.
- Trace the writing with a ball point ben (hold the page steady with your hand and be sure not to peek).
- Carefully lift the paper and take a piece of chalk to fill in the letters.
- Draw an apple at the bottom.
It is that easy!
I’m delighted because friends and family have commented on how nice our chalkboard art looks. They say they can’t write nicely with chalk. Now you know my secret 😉

That old rusty metal basket? Um, that is’t really old but from the Dollar Section at Target. I’ll share how I got this look. I also did the same thing to the metal on the blackboard. Next week I’ll share how you can rust new metal to look old. LOVING this new technique.

love the chalkboard and i have the worst writing and chalkboard writing! i am with you!
A great tip I recently heard that helps me so much writing on boards is to sharpen your chalk! A regular old pencil sharpener does the trick and makes thin lines and keep things neat when you are trying to be precise!
I never thought of “tracing” like this though, I’ll have to try it out! Thank you!

Oh my gosh, what a smart trick! I am cracking up about your hair 😉 And holy moly, I love cider doughnuts too. So good. I was just noticing today how gloriously colorful the trees are around here. Wish it would last just a little longer, it’s so pretty right at this stage with some on the ground but lots left on the trees.

Danielle – I am just getting started at decorating my new home. I am most interested in where you purchased the beautiful wicker chairs and farmhouse style pillows. Having two of those chairs and pillows in my sunroom overlooking my pond would be gorgeous!!
