A New Look for Our Entry Bench

It’s amazing what upholstery can do for furniture. Today I’m sharing a new look for our entry bench!

Amazing new upholstery for an antique bench

It really is amazing!

5 years ago, I found this sweet bench for our entry. It was love at first sight. You know me. I love old furniture, especially when it has such pretty details. I loved the graceful legs, the brass casters, the black chippy paint and the detailing on the back. I also really liked the original fabric. It was a Buffalo Check but was slightly stained (even when I bought it). If you don’t remember this is how it looked before:

I know it looks great in photos but the stains were getting worse.

I wish I could tell you that I upholstered it myself but I brought it down to my good friend, Walter Heller, at Finer Things in Scituate Harbor. He has been reupholstering furniture since he was 17 and is so skilled at it. Walter’s prices are reasonable and I couldn’t believe how quickly he finished this for me.

He actually told me that the insides were not in great shape. There was shredded foam, sea grass and some banana leaves. It sounds like someone just shoved whatever they wanted in there. Now the cushion is so comfortable!

Here’s how it came out:

A lovely antique bench, dark woodwork and an oriental rug

The fabric is by Annie Sloan and is called Paris Noir It is black stripes over a putty color. The putty color is very similar to our wall color which is Muslin by Benjamin Moore.

You may remember that I used this fabric on these chairs which I sold. I’m a lover of stripes and I love the layered look of the stripes, the glossy black chippy paint, and the oriental rug (a yard sale find).

As soon as you walk through our front door this is what you see:

Walter did such a fabulous job and he worked so quickly, too. I’m really happy with the new updated look of the bench.

I feel like the details of the piece stand out more.

It’s been pretty miserable weather here in Scituate. Rain, rain and more rain, which means wellie boots and my Barbour coat. (affiliate links)

In Navy, of course. 😉

A Nor’Easter is on the way for Saturday….

Well, at least I can glimpse our newly covered bench from the living room with the fire roaring.

What do you think of the new look for our old bench?

The bench looks great and love the new fabric.

It’s been wonderful weather here in northern NJ. Saturday the rain moves in. Happy to have had these few weeks sunny and cool with the wet summer we had.

Stay dry

Fabulous new fabric for your bench! Great choice, it makes the wooden frame so much better. It does bring out the character of that piece!

Love the fabric! Isn’t it wonderful to have someone nearby who can do such beautiful upholstery. I have used Walter at Finer Things to do a few pieces for me and I was quite happy!

It looks beautiful and at first, I had thought you had distressed it even more. I guess the change in fabric does make a huge difference. Love those stripes.

I was so glad to get this, been out of town visiting cousins. This is a beautiful piece, curvy with character and love the material you covered it with. Thanks for sharing.
