His bedroom set was mine growing up. It is old Ethan Allen and the table really needed a makeover. Here's how it was looking:

I also wasn't loving the current color. So I first sanded it with a palm sander and stained it with Minwax Special Walnut. Then I applied Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint's Hemp Oil. I love this stuff!!!!

I didn't use the bonding agent because I wanted some chips and peels. I was hoping for a bit more but that is the beauty of milk paint - the surprise factor. After I distressed it, I applied two coats of MMS Milk Paint Wax to seal it.
John came with me to Anthropologie and he picked out this petrified wood knob. This knob wasn't cheap. I think it was $14, but it is so him. It kind of fits with his style - rustic, nature lover, explorer -

Here you can see the chipping and flaking of the milk paint.
John immediately filled his bedside table with his beloved books:
and filled the drawer with National Geographic Kids and other treasures. I'm so happy we made this one over together!

It looks great. One of these days I'm going to try some of her milk paint.
ReplyDeleteLove the petrified wood for the handle!!
ReplyDeleteSuch a great make-over!! I love his new room, especially the flags and Brimfield chest! I'm about to try my first furniture piece with MMS' milk paint, can't wait! Love that you guys worked on this together, the knob he picked out is so cool:)
ReplyDeleteSarah, thank you so much! I also love the flats and the Brimfield chest. It was such a great find. Oooh, good luck with the milk paint - it is slight different than chalk paint. I'd recommend watching MMS tutorials before you start. I think you'll love it. The knob he picked is perfect, huh?
DeleteLooks great! My kids love books also. I also really like that bedding.
ReplyDeleteLove the deep red color and the dark wood top. That color combo looks great and so nautical. Great job.
ReplyDeleteDarling, and I love that knob!! I think I need to order some of that red.
ReplyDeleteI love that this little piece doubles as a bookshelf! Perfection! Found you through the hop!
