Lobstahs! {DIY New England Clambake}

New Enland Lobsters

We like our lobsters up here on the Irish Riviera (in Scituate).  It isn’t an odd sight to see lobster pots in people’s backyards or millions of buoys in the cold Atlatic waters marking where the pots sit eagerly awaiting a fresh catch.

In honor of Heritage Days in Scituate Harbor we decided to have an intimate clambake with the boys and my parents.  It was the very first time we cooked our own lobsters and it was so much fun!

Some friends have boats and catch lobster daily, but we don’t.  Instead we went to Mullany’s fish market and got some lovely lobsters that were caught that day.

Picking out our lobsters

John and Conor loved seeing all the lobsters and they even picked the ones had for dinner.

At Mullany’s Fish Market

We used a large lobster pot to steam the lobsters.  A friend recommended using salt water (from the sea) mixed with fresh water.  Get the steam rolling and then place the lobsters in.  If you don’t live near the sea then you can use a brine you make yourself.  The lobsters usually take ten minutes.  You’ll know when they’re done because they’ll go a bright red and you can pull the antenna off.

I let Luke do the fun bit of cracking the lobster out of the shell and cleaning them.  When they were ready we served them with drawn butter.  You can’t have a clambake with out clam chowder and some sides!
We had fresh corn on the cob and yummy chorizo sausages roasted with fingerling potatoes.  I roasted them in the oven with salt and olive oil:

I also made a yummy summer salad throwing together some things from the garden and thought you might like the recipe.
Summer Salad
Summer Salad
– Roasted fingerling potatoes
– Cherry tomatoes
– Spinach
– Chives
– Feta Cheese
– Chickpeas
– Lemon Juice
– Olive Oil

Cut up roasted potatoes and freshly picked tomatoes and toss them in a bowl.  Add half a container of feta cheese, chopped chives, spinach, a can of chickpeas (rinsed and drained), the juice of one lemon and a dash of olive oil.  Toss and serve!  The salad is bursting the flavors of summer!

Summer Salad

The lobster was sweet and tender.  The chorizo was nice and smokey and a nice accompaniment to the the crisp roasted potatoes.  The corn on the cob was a bit hit (especially with the boys) and the summer salad was filled with many flavors of summer.

Our New England Clambake

The clambake was the perfect way to celebrate Heritage Days and summer with my family.  Hope you can enjoy a clambake in your home soon!
