Hand-Made Holiday: Model Magic Ornaments

Handmade heart ornament

Okay, okay, I know it isn’t even Thanksgiving yet, but we do need to start thinking about the C word {Chirstmas}, especially if we are making gifts.  Oldies 103 has already started playing carols!

To me the joy of Christmas is about spending time with my family and being grateful for this wonderful life.  It isn’t about expensive, designer gifts. I’m not really into name brands.  Saying that,  I love giving and receiving handmade gifts.  I think there is nothing more special than a gift that someone put their time and love into.  My very crafty neighbor made me the most beautiful, paper bird ornament out of old pages from a book.  I love it and can’t wait to hang it on our tree this year.

I know so many of you are crafty out there and would love to hear your gift ideas.  I’ve decided it would be fun to do a series of hand-made gift ideas for the whole family leading up to the holidays.

Today, we’re discussing model magic ornaments.  They are really easy to make, no need to bake in the oven and ready to hang or give in 72 hours.

What You’ll Need:

1. Model Magic
2. Rolling Pin
3. Cookie Cutters
4. Letters or stamps (optional)
5. Straw to poke hole
5. String, ribbon, hemp to hang
6. Wax paper

I’m sure many of you have some of this stuff already laying around.

So what you need to do is take a piece of model magic and roll it out.  Make sure it isn’t too thin and press the cookie cutter in.  Rounded shapes work better than shapes with sharp edges.  I leave the cookie cutter there and remove the excess from the edges before taking the shape out.  Then I stamp the letters, words or design I want and poke the hole.

Once you’re done, you’ll want to lay your ornaments out on wax paper (so they don’t stick) and let them dry for 72 hours.  I flipped mine over to make sure they dried on both side.

Below are some examples of ornaments we made:

A dinosaur that is hanging on John’s wall.  You know it’s his wish for dinosaurs to still be alive.

A sweet little mitten:
The possibilities are endless and they really are so fun and easy to make.  I did one for each John and Conor for our Christmas tree this year.

John did the free from with all the smiley faces in it.  Think how pretty these white ornaments will be hanging on the evergreen branches!  Hope you enjoy this craft with your family!

Completely adorable—now, where do you get the model magic. I looked at target after your last post and couldn’t find it. my kids love clay so this would be PERFECT for them!

Liz, you can get it at Michael’s and Amazon.com. Possibly the other craft stores too. There are so many fun things you can do with it. You can’t paint the ornaments, too, but we are leaving our’s white.

Adorable! Isn’t it great making things with kids? We loved making things here and I think we’re going to try a bit of this for some Valentine’s Day decorating. Thanks for the ideas!
