DIY: Teacher Gifts
As the school year raps up, I thought it might nice to share a DIY teacher gift we made at Christmas for Conor’s teachers.
Conor loved making these and his teachers loved them too!
They are pretty easy. Conor picked the colors based on what he thought his teachers would like.
Here’s what you’ll need for this DIY project –
DIY Chalkboard Coasters
Materials:
– Square tiles from your local hardware store
– Chalkboard Paint in black or Annie Sloan Chalk Paint
– A brush
– Chalk
-Adhesive backed cork (from Michaels or another craft store)
I first thought we’d use black chalkboard paint playing up the school room idea. Conor mixed it all up
Then I had him roller it onto these tiles thinking, “Wow, this is going to be great!”
But as you can see, this wasn’t looking great. I think the problem was the roller. I decided to go with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint because I have loads of it and I love how it goes on so smoothly. Conor picked Florence and Antibes Green for his teachers.
We painted three coats on each tile and once dry rubbed chalk all over it to prep the surface to be ready as a chalkboard.
Then we used adhesive backed cork, cutting it to fit each square. That way they coasters could be used without having to worry about scratching table tops.
We wrapped this pretty little package up with with twine and chalk. Ready for some chalkboard fun!

Thanks, Kathy! So sorry for the confusion! No, you could use black chalkboard paint. Paint three coats with a brush (not a roller) and then rub with chalk to prep the surface. If you want colorful chalkboard coasters then you can use Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. Paint as above and once dry rub with chalk to prep the surface.
