Affordable Fall Decorating

I always find shifting into a new season a little hard, especially when it’s the shift from summer to fall, but today I’m sharing affordable fall decorating ideas!

I’ve actually been really busy with our watercolor calendar, new products (including designing wallpaper and fabric) and some outdoor DIY projects that I haven’t started decorating our home for fall.

I plan on starting this week… As usual, I plan on taking my inspiration from nature. There’s so much here in New England. Fall is a great time to rely on nature – it brings a beautiful color palette and is there anything more affordable?

Fall Decorating

I think we’re all busy and all feel a little pinch this season with the prices of gas and general goods going up. So let me give you ideas you can use to welcome this new season but do so affordably. Ready for the ideas???

Green Cornstalks

I started using these a few years ago and flanking our entry with them. I LOVE when they are green as photographed but they do turn a pale straw color once they are dried. Our front door is painted in Benjamin Moore’s Buxton Blue in high gloss. It’s a wonderful color in all seasons.

The above photo shows it with warm orange and rust tones, but if you prefer greens I paired them with a succulent wreath and green pumpkins the previous year.

Why I love Cornstalks

  • They give height and when tied to our columns make our front door a focal point.
  • They’re pretty affordable.
  • As nature fades the cornstalk turn and add to the patina of the falling leaves

Forage Flowers and Branches from Your Yard

This is probably the most affordable way of decorating and what I do.

Marble topped dresser with crock filled with hydrangeas and eucalyuptus

I intentionally plant flowers in our yard that I LOVE and clip them to enjoy inside. In the above arrangement I used vanilla strawberry hydrangeas that are growing by our garden gate and paired them with grocery store eucalyptus and placed in an old crock.

Special Tip: Place a smaller vase in the crock – it will keep your flowers standing tall AND you don’t have to use as many branches or flower stalks.

Be sure to remove all leaves from below the water line.

More Inspiration with Flowers

I LOVE flowers and I use many in our home decor. Some fall growing ones that are perfect are: Zinnias, Sunflowers, Dahlias, Daisies Limelight and Vanilla Strawberry Hydrangeas.

White Baby Boo Pumpkins

These little pumpkins are so sweet and only cost a $1 or less. I love that they last the whole season. I use them in ironstone bowls and molds on tablescapes, I place them on place settings for tablescapes, and I love using them on shelves in our dining room. They say fall in a simple way.

Free Printables

Another way to get your home ready for fall is free printables. I’ve actually shared many over the years. Click here to see all my free printables.

I shared this fall leaf printable last year. It would look pretty in a gold frame or on place settings for a fall event.

Make A Wreath

Making your own wreath is another affordable way to celebrate the change of season. I made this one using affordable branches and a grape vine leaf. It actually looks so good I might put it out again this year.

Use Leaves for Accents

I love clipping branches and placing them in charcuterie and serving trays. It doesn’t cost any money but makes it feel more festive (even if it’s only our family enjoying the yard).
