Selecting Colors (Master Bedroom Makeover)

Guess, what it’s time to crack open the paint cans, well, nearly! Today, I’m talking about selecting colors for our master bedroom makeover.

So far I’ve shared our inspiration.

Bedroom Inspiration

and how we installed our wide plank floors.

The electrician just came yesterday and installed our new radiators. Luke removed the old ones and there was so much dust in there, no wonder it always smelled like burning when we turned them on. He literally filled our Dyson by vacuuming them. We thought it was best to be safe than sorry to install brand new ones and also have our electrician do it for us. We weren’t sure about the wiring etc. So we’ve been waiting on that before we could install the new baseboard and the wall panelling. Now, that it’s done; we’re gonna get to nailing and painting. Yay! Then hopefully move all our furniture back in the room (it’s currently spread across every room on the second floor). Luke’s taking next week off so it’s our goal to get it all done before so we can enjoy our staycation rather than working during all of it.

Wall color is such an important decision when considering options for your home. Kilz reached out to me and the minute I saw the beautiful Magnolia Home colors I knew I wanted to use them for our bedroom. Before, I show you the colors on our walls, here’s a few colors from the Kilz site:

They all have a wonderful story and are inspired by nature. I love Joanna’s style and design; her color palette is stunning. There are 150 colors in the range, available in matte, eggshell and satin. The paint is high quality acrylic paint with paint and primer in one. It is mold, mildew, and grime resistant. I don’t see this being an issue in our bedroom but good to know if you plan on painting a playroom, kitchen or bathroom.

The other thing I love is the paint samples that they sent me.

Look how big these samples are!

Okay, I have to admit something to you guys. You know those little paint samples in tiny plastic bottles? I bought one once and I never even used it. I’m more of a “let’s go buy the paint and paint the walls girl”. I can’t be bothered to paint squares all over the room. Can you? To be honest, I haven’t had huge mis-steps when it’s come to selecting paints. I shared a few of our favorite colors here, but I did paint our entire kitchen with a gray that looked more blue than I thought it would, only to find out it was mixed wrong at the store.  Sigh. Has that happened to you before?

Anyway, the great thing about these swatches is you can stick them on your wall.

Yup, they’re peel and stick:

As an aside, do you like my french manicure?

I hardly ever get my nails done, as they are usually covered in paint from crafts and projects around our home, so had to get some shots.

These paint swatches are peel and stick AND reusable!

I stuck a bunch up here in our room:

Selecting the perfect neutral color palette for our bedroom makeover

All such pretty colors. On the wall from left to right are: Antique Rose, Shiplap, True White, Weathered Windmill and Rainy Days. Our current walls are a light blue gray which is pretty but I want something a little cleaner and a little brighter. We’ve decided to go with these two:

The colors for our bedroom - pretty whites

True White which is a bright white for the trim and shiplap for the walls. Shiplap is an aged white that has a slight hint of gray. We’re planning on doing paneled walls (as in the inspiration image) so I think that color would work great. It’s a creamy white. The photograph of the boat and our woven blinds will remain the same. I’ve been getting a few questions about this on Instagram.

I thought you might like to see what Joanna says about the shiplap color:

As you know, we’ve added wide plank flooring with beautiful knots and wood grain. It’s just so lovely. I know this creamy white will add just the right classic touch. We’re going for coastal New England not trendy. I want a look that I can come back to again and again and never tire.

We will share the paneling and baseboard how-to and the final reveal when it’s all done. Fingers crossed that it’s not too long now. I’m dying to see this space come together.
