Holiday Ornament Display (Reveal)

You do? Well, I built that!

I’m always scared of the saw so I make my hubby do that stuff but this time around I did it all myself. I am so proud of me 😉 You may remember last week, that I shared I’d be working with The Home Depot and other bloggers on a Do It Herself Workshop for a Holiday Ornament Display, click here to see that post.

This is how the Home Depot project looked:

So cool right? Some of you guys emailed me and told me you already signed up for your own workshop at Home Depot, yay!

I wanted to make mine a little more coastal to go with my She Shed (another project I worked with The Home Depot on).

Last weekend I went to the store with my boys. They love going there 😉 and picked up supplies. This is what I used for this project:

To create this I only used wood, three different stains, some silver ornaments, a few treasures from the beach, hot glue and some screws.

Can you believe it?

The step by step DIH instructions, were easy to follow, made constructing it a breeze.

Then I made it my own with stains.

Once the boards were assembled. I popped open three cans of stains. For this project I used two by Varathane – American Walnut and Weathered Gray. I worked with these two first. Wiping the stain on in sections and wiping back excess and layering more of the gray on top. I really wanted to create a barnwood look. If you look at real barnwood the color isn’t uniform. It can be patchy. There’s imperfections and color variations.

Once I was finished. I stood back and it looked a little too red. So I added a bit more stain, this time Minwax’s Special Walnut (it has a cooler undertone) and a bit more of the Weathered Gray.

The key to working with wood and aging it, is to stand back and look at it while you go. I always tweak a little bit more. After wiping back all the excess stain, I left it over night to dry. Since this is decorative I didn’t add a top coat but would do so if it was a tabletop or something with heavy use.

In the morning, I played with the ornaments and my seaside treasures. I thought about doing a wreath, but just felt like that star fish looked perfect on top 😉

I got a giant pack of silver ornaments so I’d have extra to decorate with and also put on presents once they’re wrapped. I love how this set had so many variations, some of them reminded me of sea urchins.

I placed the ornaments on the boards and played with position before gluing. They rolled around a bit. I heated my hot glue up and first glued on my giant star fish then I added all the ornaments.

For the trunk of the tree and the base I used driftwood I found on the beach with my kids. We love to walk our local beaches and look for treasures. The ocean is right down the street from our home. We hunt for treasures on the beach all year long, walking with the dogs, it’s my favorite way to spend time as a family.

There’s something magical about the sights and sounds of the shore.

That driftwood has the prettiest blue paint on it too. That color always makes my heart happy.

Christmas on the coast is neutral with fresh greenery and lots of whites.

I found the miniature pine tree at Home Depot and love how it has little sparkles on it.

The silver baubles mirror that on my ornament display.

I used some of the extra ornaments in an antique ironstone serving dish and put it on the shelf underneath.

I love how this gives my shed an instant Christmas makeover (my home is still decorated for fall as we’re hosting Thanksgiving), but soon everywhere will be Coastal Christmas!
