Winter Mantel

We took our Christmas decorations down on January 6th, twelfth night, and I was so sad. I really loved the twinkling lights this year. See our decor here. I decided to keep some of the greenery up in the living room just to add some brightness and warmth to the space. It’s still winter after all. It snowed the other day and the living room was looking so bright, perfect for photography with my good camera! I thought you’d like a peek.

Using Vintage Elements to Add Warmth

Pretty books stacked up add so much charm. I love the texture they add.

Old chippy books stacked on mantel

Pretty ironstone filled with faux greenery…

I got this little strawberry bottle up antiquing in Toronto almost 10 years ago!!!

Natural Accents

I also love using real things from nature. Giant pine cones from the supermarket or forage pine cones from the woods add so much beauty during the winter months.

Ironstone and pinecones

I dropped the lid on that ironstone so now it’s glued together…Thanks to my handy hubby.

I’ve also mixed some shells in as you know we’re super closer to the beach:

Cozy by the Fire

It has been so cold here. It was 9° F yesterday, so as you can imagine we’re spending lots of time here by the fire…

Cozy fireplace

I get a lot of questions about our fireplace and our gas insert. I know it looks so realistic but it is gas. We redid the fireplace here and this is an updated post more about it. The hearth is bluestone and the surround is fossilized ocean flooring. I wanted something that looked like it was always here. We don’t technically need the screen but I just think it’s better to have with Max.

As you can see lots of of blue and white and green accents.

The leather couch is by the fire now and it’s where I start and end the day. I love reading books and magazines here cozy in my blanket. Max LOVES being perched on top of the couch or my lap.

Another peek at our built-ins:

Built in cabinet with glass knob

Can you believe those tulips are faux? Aren’t they great?!? I’ve had them for years…

Okay, one more look at the mantel and Max!

And my cutie pie…

Hi Danielle!!!
Burrrrr ….. you guys are really going to be getting it this weekend…be safe. We might get some snow on Saturday….I hope~I hope.
I am curious what is in that little built in cabinet or what was it intended to be used for? That is the “awe” of old homes….mystery little additions. I do miss my 1905 Craftsman home, that I owed for 15 years….she was a beauty. Since we were only the third owners it was very original.
News !!!!….I just started taking some watercolor classes!!! Yay!!! it is fun and very relaxing.
…/jos xoxo

Same here! We live in a Norman Rockwell-ish quaint old village of Cazenovia NY. But gotta admit the snowy sights are gorgeous❄⛄❄

I love the detail you have included in this post and the clickable references to other information. The way you have divided the room into two seating areas is especially interesting to me. Could you tell me how long and wide your whole room is and the approximate size of each of the two areas? I have what I think is a similar space and this is one of the first layouts I’ve seen that may work for me! Thank you
