A Silver Penny of my Own!

As many of you know, my blog is called Silver Pennies because of the book of poems my mother gave me when I was younger.  Silver Pennies are very rare and according to the author, “You must have a silver penny to get into fairyland.”

My copy of Silver Pennies
When the book was published in 1929 there were no silver pennies.  Well, guess what I got for Christmas from my parents?  My very own silver penny.  In 1943 they made silver pennies due to the war effort.  They needed copper.  So they made the 1943 penny with steel, plated in zinc. It is one of the wheat pennies – see the wheat on the back?  I love this side of coin.  My parents had this mint condition penny mounted on a sparkling, silver chain.  It is one of the best presents I’ve ever received.

This little shiny penny and this little blog; both mean so much to me and have brought me so much (unexpected) happiness.

On another note, my dad collects coins.  Well, I guess that isn’t exactly right.  He keeps coins and odd change in a bank I gave him when I was little and then rolls them.  He has done this ever since I was a small and had never heard of a ‘silver penny’.  He never came across one.  Then, the other day my parents were having their daily coffee at Dunkin’ Donuts and the girl came across another ‘silver penny’ and asked my dad if he wanted it.  My dad said to the lady, “Wow.  That is so funny because my daughter’s blog is called Silver Pennies.”  She looked at him strangely – perhaps not knowing what a blog was.  I’m not sure if this is luck, a good omen or fate.  I have to admit that I am slightly superstitious (to my husbands annoyance) – I change my path when I see a black cat cross in front of me, no walking under ladders, no shoes on the table and no mentioning MacBeth in a theater!  Ha!

But I’m hoping these two silver pennies are luck!  Hoping you all find your silver penny, too!
