Meet Our New Puppy Beau!

We have the happiest news to share with you! We just adopted a puppy last weekend. If you follow me on social media you may have seen him (on Instagram, threads). I’m typing in the kitchen with sweet little Beau asleep by my side (he’s snoring).

Thinking About Rescuing Again

Max misses Poppy. We all do, actually, but we’ve gotten over the initial grief of losing her. We thought it would be nice to maybe adopt a dog again. A companion for Max and a new life in our home. When we returned from England Max was super lonely. He spent the 10 days we were away playing with our dog sitter’s 12 year old dog. The photos of them playing and chilling together said it all. Max was lonely.

The rest of February consisted of Max moping around the house… I got to thinking that this season of our life – the spring, especially is the best time to adopt. I began looking at shelters online. We kept an eye on our local shelter – Scituate Animal Shelter in Scituate and the shelter we adopted Poppy from – Sterling Animal Shelter in Sterling. We didn’t see any dogs that would be quite right at Scituate but saw many that might work at Sterling.

Adopting Beau

We discovered a bunch of puppies would be available on Friday so thought we’d take a ride there on Saturday if any dogs were still available.

We saw Beau’s photo online and both Conor and I sighed, “aw!” when we saw him and he was still available for adoption on Saturday morning. Our hearts melted.

We took him outside to meet Max:

Max was quite interested in this little pup and didn’t growl at him. Max isn’t aggressive but he does get nervous, especially with bigger dogs. Max being so open and receptive to Beau was a really good sign. We spent about 30 minutes playing with Beau but we pretty much knew immediately we wanted to bring him home.

Sterling Animal Shelter

If you’re thinking of adopting we highly recommend Sterling Animal Shelter. They are wonderful there. All the animals are so well cared for and truly loved. Most animals come up from the South. Both times our puppies have been fully vaccinated and fixed.

Included with the adoption fee was a gift basket of toys and goodies for Beau, a bag of dog food, a free vet check up at VCA (where we bring Max), a month of pet insurance, a leash, a collar, and tag. Really everything needed to just be able to bring him home. We already had Max’s crate and bought a new dog bed to fit inside the crate at Sterling.

What we love about Sterling is they require everyone who lives in the home to come to the shelter to meet the perspective pet and you can meet with any dog or cat that’s available. You don’t have to apply online first. Then if you find a pet you want to adopt you fill in the paperwork after.

More About Beau

Woman holding a rescue puppy at Sterling Animal Shelter

Beau is a mixed breed from Texas. He was born on November 23, 2025. The shelter didn’t know what breeds he is. We think maybe lab and shepherd but people online have said Black Mouthed Cur. So we don’t know. He was one of 6 puppies but the last adopted at the shelter.

He loves to cuddle and is very lovable. He enjoys other dogs and people. I love watching him. Everything is new through a puppy’s eyes and he’s interested in crows and little birds, he tries to eat our crushed shells, sticks, and leaves. Beau is currently teething so wants to chew everything we picked up some stuff from Devine. I’ll link some of his favorites below.

Beau is pretty smart and inquisitive. He is doing well potty training (we’re confined to the kitchen) and has had a few accidents but it’s going well. He’s doing great with stairs and we’re walking him around the harbor. He gets tired and scared of big trucks so pick him up on Front Street.

He had surgery three days before we adopted him so he can’t get the incision wet. Since there is still snow in the backyard we’re keeping him on a leash. Max and Beau really played in the yard yesterday afternoon and it made my heart so happy.

He is food motivated. He eats so fast. We got an insert for his bowl but I’m going to get a new type today that sticks to the floor.

I love watching him. He has soulful eyes and will just sit and look inquistively at Max or something in our yard.

Max gets car sick and doesn’t love the car so we’re trying to take Beau on as many car rides as possible.

He will see the vet on Tuesday and we’ll start puppy training soon. If anyone has a good local recommendation let me know.

He enjoys sitting on the couch with us in the evenings. He just snoozes. It’s tiring being a puppy.

It’s funny how as a dog gets older one forgets these puppy years. I don’t remember Poppy or Max really teething. I remember being in the kitchen with Max for quite a while to train him. Having a puppy is tiring and yet so rewarding. I have little teeth marks all over my hands but I know he won’t stay this little forever so trying to really embrace these first weeks. I chronicled Max’s early time in the house, whcih you can read below:

I’ll be sure to give more updates on little Beau here and on social media. We are so grateful to welcome him into his forever home.
