DIY Drop Cloth Christmas Stockings

Hi friends, I’m so excited to share how to make your own Drop Cloth Stockings today! I was invited by my friend Jessica over at Dear Emmeline to take part in the 25 Days of Christmas with some fantastically creative blogging friends.

 I think you know some of these amazing ladies, right?!?  Well, we’re all counting down with you and sharing some DIYs, crafts, recipes and fun projects to celebrate the love and friendship that is Christmas.  It is day number 6 and I have some fun stockings for you!

Today, I’m sharing how to make your own drop cloth stockings.  This is a super easy craft and super affordable. I only sew pillows so now I can sew pillows AND stockings.  This only cost me $2.50 a stocking.

We had sweet red stockings with our handprints but I wanted something more neutral.

Here’s what you need:

Materials
– Sewing Machine
– Drop Cloth 4 x 5 – I got mine at Lowes for $5.95 and this made four stockings
– Craft Paper – for pattern
– Scissors
– Ribbon of your choice – I got mine at Target for a $1
– Citra Solv – for image transfer
– Sharpie
– Burlap (or other fabric of your choice)
– Greenery and Twine – optional

1. Wash your drop cloth.  It makes it feel so soft and it was lovely to work with this way.

2. Trace an old stocking or find a pattern online.  I used our old stocking and traced around the whole thing with a pencil.  Then I added a seam allowance of an inch, which ended up being too big because I wanted to get four stockings out of my drop cloth.

3. Fold your drop cloth so you can trace your stocking on to the fabric (enabling you to cut two at at time).  Use the hemmed edge for the top of the stockings.

4. Turn the stocking the wrong way.  Line the ribbon up on the side to hang and stitch along, so you sew them ribbon into the seam.  Make sure you have none tucked inside, just in the seam.  Follow the stocking along until you’ve sewn the whole thing.  Repeat.

5. I used scraps of the drop cloth to make the name tags.  I printed out our names in Scriptina Font in 44 pt in reverse on a laser printer (or you can use a photocopy if you don’t have a laser printer). But you can do whatever font you’d like or if you have pretty handwriting do them freehand with a sharpie.

6. Transfer the text using Citra Solv transfer method.  You want the writing side down and make sure to tape it in place then use a paint brush to apply the Citra Solv to the back of the paper.  Then use a spoon to rub the text onto the fabric.  For a tutorial on Citra Solv transfer click here.

7. I wanted the text darker so I went over with a black sharpie.

8. Sew the two materials together with the sewing machine and I tacked it to the stocking by hand sewing (just in case I want to remove them or do something different than burlap next year).

I added some fresh greenery and holly by tying it with twine to the ribbon.

We’re loving how the stockings look and can’t wait to share our mantel with you next week.
