Boxing Day & Winter Break

Happy Boxing Day!  No, I’m not talking about prize fighters duking it out.  Today is a fun holiday celebrated in England. According to my English family, the wealthy used to give their help the day off and the help would leave out cold meats and leftovers for landowners’ dinner.  Hope they are having a wonderful bank holiday across the pond!

I don’t know about you but I’m exhausted and ready to veg on the couch.   Today, Boxing Day, also marks the first full day of school vacation.  Are you wondering what your going to do with your little ones this break?  Looking for ideas?  I have a few.

25 (South Shore) Winter Holiday Ideas

1. Toys, Toys and more toys!  Why not let them take a day to enjoy all their new toys and presents?  (That is at least my plan for today).

2. A walk on the beach searching for sea glass and other treasures.

3. There are some great movies out there.  We’ve enjoyed The Muppets and Arthur Christmas recently.
In the woods.
4. An adventure into the woods.  My boys always love taking Poppy for a walk and looking for the Gruffalo in Wheelwright Park.  If you’re local to the South Shore there are loads of wooded trails.
5. Too cold for a scoop?  Nevah! Why not try out some fun winter flavors at Nonna’s in Hingham?

6. No snowflakes here yet, but you can create your own by making some snowflake crayons.
7. A trip to Wahlburgers for the best burgers in town!
8. Take the train into Boston to visit one of our great museums – Museum of Science, Children’s Museum, the Aquarium or the Harvard Natural History Museum.

9. Ice Skating!  In Scituate it is not cold enough to skate outdoors yet, but Pilgrim Skating Arena has some open skate time for kids.  Our 2 year old just got his first skates from Nonni & Grampy and is raring to go.
10. If we do get snow then we’ll definitely go sledding and will build a snowman.

11. An arts & craft morning.  Get the paints, rolls of paper and brushes out and let them create.
12. Pizza anyone?  Why not try a pie from Riva’s Pizzeria tonight?
13. Read!  Read some books they got from Santa or take them to the library for some new fun reads.
14. Cook.  Why not let them help you make something yummy for dinner?  It is a great week for chili and they can help cut the veggies and dump in the beans.
15. Take a nap.
16. Discover nature at the South Shore Science Center.
17. Play Uno.
18. Some indoor play fun at the South Shore Sports Center.
19. A movie night in with freshly made popcorn.
20. Going out for brekkie.  Either to Dunkin Donuts or Sam’s in the harbor.
21. Yoga.  I’ve missed my yoga practice so thinking I’ll try to do some downward dog with the kids this week.
22. Let them eat cake!  Cupcakes that is at Baked. in North Scituate.
23. Make up stories, one sentence at a time.  John loves this one and it is also a good car game.  Also, love Red Car.  John created when he was 2.  If you see a red car say ‘red car’.  The person who gets the most red cars wins!
24. Make some pancakes.
25. Finally, give them snuggles on the couch and tell them  how much you love spending time together!
Have a great Boxing Day!
