Stunning Rose Floral Arrangements

It’s so cold and snowy here in Scituate with undoubtably more snow on the way. The world is so heavy and sad right now that I find myself retreating into my home and projects that bring me joy. Analog activities like watercolor, floral arranging, and baking. Are you feeling the same way? I thought today I’d share some stunning rose floral arrangements. These are lovely for Valentine’s Day but also lovely as a pick me up any day.

What You’ll Need

  • Flowers – any type you like. I got my flowers at Trader Joe’s
  • Floral Foam
  • Vessels – I’m using an antique copper vessel and a terracotta heart (similar to the heart)
  • Bucket
  • Water
  • Clippers
  • Knife to cut foam

You’ll also need patience which is something I don’t have a lot of (Ha! Ha!). I like to do everything quick, but it’s important to give the floral foam some time to soak in the water.

Floral Foam

There are two kinds of floral foam. You will want the type you can wet, this is the type that can be used with real flowers. The dry foam is for silk or artificial flowers.

This was my first time using floral foam. I got a multipack at Michaels, but this is very similar to the one I used. They also make disks that would be fun to use. I also love these that you could put on champagne or wine bottles as a little special gift bouquet.

I made a few mistakes with the foam so here are my tips:

  • Place floral foam in a large container of water so it can float freely. Do NOT push it down as it can create air bubbles in the foam. The water should be warm. I used cold water which I don’t think helped.
  • I would leave it for quite some time so it’s good and wet. The company also recommends sprinkling that water with the plant food so the flowers last as long as possible.
  • Cut the foam AFTER you submerge it in water. It’s very easy to work with when wet. I cut it with a bread knife.

I used a bucket for the floral foam but I’d recommend using a rectangular container, especially if you get the floral foam bricks so there’s more room for it to float in the water.

Flowers I Used

I wanted something with a romantic / Valentine’s Day feel so I opted for two types of roses.

Pale pink roses

Doing the two sizes allowed for more texture and visual interest of the arrangement.

I love the colors. I also got some baby’s breath and ferns. I really wanted other greenery but they didn’t have any when I was at the store. I think mixed greens or eucalyptus would also be pretty in this type of arrangement.

Arranging the Flowers

  • Once the floral cube is saturated cut it to fit your vessel.
  • I started with the larger roses and mixed in the smaller roses. You want to cut the stems a 45 degree angle and stab into the floral foam.
  • Fill in with accent flowers like baby’s breath, ferns, and other greenery. The greenery is a great way to hide the floral foam. You can also use moss to hide it.

Here’s a little reel I shared on Instagram of the process.

I had so many flowers, I ended up doing two arrangements and loved using this vintage copper pot for the second one:

So cheerful on cold winter days!

To extend the life of floral arrangements, make sure to water daily. They will last up to a week. I hope this was helpful if you want to make your Valentine or Galantine a special arrangement.

I’m loving them by the fire with a good book!

Your roses are beautiful!
You did a great job on both arrangements.

Now to your fireplace. Yes, I have read several times how you updated your fireplace. Very helpful, but I have more questions.
We want to covert wood burning to natural gas. We have natural gas heaters. Do you use gas or electric? Does your insert have a thermostate? A fan? If electric is off do you have any heat from the fireplace?

Thank you for your help!
