A Brush with Brilliance: Frida & Van Gogh Halloween Costumes

I’m so excited to share our Halloween costumes. As you know Halloween is my favorite and I haven’t dressed up the last few years but I’m so excited to be taking part this year. This year we’re going as two iconic artists, Frida Kalho and Vincent van Gogh. Read on to see our costumes and sources. We love to DIY our Halloween costumes and I have some fun tips for you!

Halloween Costume Tips

I personally like to craft my costume from a multitude of sources. I don’t like buying a ready made costume because I think one you create will look more layered and I also think it’s more fun. So we did look in costume stores but I just felt like that route didn’t feel super creative to me.

We always start at Savers and we always have so much luck there! For example, the top and skirt are both from Savers and I got them for $10 together. I may actually wear both pieces again which is a bonus but probably not together. In year’s past we’ve found John’s Joker jacket and tie there and also found the choir robe who used for the crow costume.

Luke’s blazer and shirt were also from Savers. The blazer is a Ralph Lauren Chaps and was unworn. He got it for $12.99. So shopping this way is more affordable and more original! Oh, and also better for the environment.

Vincent Van Gogh Halloween Costume

Luke is going as Vincent van Gogh. We love his art and wanted to lean into his brilliance.

Okay, let’s take a closer look at Vincent. We really wanted to get a white collarless shirt but we couldn’t find one. Instead we went with this stripped shirt and light brown blazer both from Savers.

The paint brushes are mine and the palette came with some art supplies. I’m thinking about adding some paint to it for him.

We did buy a beard and eyebrows but I worry he might look more like a leprechaun with them. So he’s trying to grow his beard out a bit. We looked for orange hair dye but that might go totally wrong.

Frida Kalho

I’m going as Frida Kalho. It was so much fun to look at photos of her and try to create her unique look! She is so naturally pretty and had such a great sense of style. I knew I wanted to do the braid, the headpiece, AND the uni brow!

I had planned on making my own headband with flowers but when I saw this one online I knew it would be perfect and so much easier. I love the height of the flowers.

As I said, we found the skirt and top and Savers. The top has peasant style arms so I thought it fit the look and time period. I found the scarf on Amazon and thought it gave the look I was going for affordably.

Woman dressed up as Frida

I don’t usually wear red lipstick but felt it was a must for Frida. The color is by Number 7 – it’s called Soft Cherry and I used my Jones Road brown eye liner to line my eyes but also create the unibrow. The chunky gold knotted necklace and earrings were a great find from Joye in the Harbor and they’re something I may wear again (possibly not at the same time together).

I love the headband. It is really high quality and the brand also makes other versions. It is very comfortable. The braid is faux hair but looks so real. It comes in all different hair colors but I got this because it most closely matched my own.

For the collarless white shirt…if Luke has an old white shirt or else purchase a cheap one and cut the collar off…just the collar above the band…

OHHHHH….FRIDA~FRIDA~FRIDA!!!!! Ppppperrrrfect!!! You nailed it!!! I am not one for Halloween but I do love to see the creativity. Love the unibrow…that was a must! As a side note…in my 20’s I could have used my own real unibrow…thank goodness for electrolysis!!! That braid matches your hair perfectly. I would have thought it to be your real hair. And the headband is just perfect. What is so unique about Frida, is you can spot her immediately….you don’t have to be into art…love that!!! Luke looks sooo different. Is it the hat? the unshaved? With that hat I see a lot… Read more »
