Where the Sky Meets the Sea
Ocean waves of blue, tangy salt air, the spray of the surf, and the feel of the wind in your hair. Let me take you where the sky meets the sea! Join us for a day out on the water fishing with friends.
This was such a magical day. Our friend, Greg, invited us out on his motorboat for a day of fun in Scituate Harbor. We didn’t know we’d be fishing but our boys were so excited.

This little trip happened Memorial Day weekend and I’ve been eager to share the beautiful vistas of Scituate with you. The perspective from the water is a slightly different view than I’m used to. I love how quiet it is out on the water. I love watching the seagulls searching for breakfast.
Will you join us on this little boat ride?

Catching Bait
We headed out to where mackerel was and everyone cast out…

I couldn’t believe how many little mackerel they all caught. They’d get three or four on the line at the time.

Look at how those mackerel shimmer in the sun!
Greg recommends using live bait for fishing.
Sun Splashed Afternoon

The vibrant colors by the shore make my heart happy. That deep green against the blue. Sigh.
The cormorants were sunning themselves. I absolutely love how they dry their wings.
Here’s the view of Scituate from the boat:

Gone Fishing
This was our kids’ first real experience of fishing on a boat and they loved it. It was a banner day! EVERYONE caught a striped bass and Conor caught two!

According to regulations you can only bring a striped bass home if it’s a certain size. It can’t be too big or too small. So most of them we threw back in the water, but we did bring this one home for dinner. It was just the right size and it was perfect grilled with olive oil, salt, and pepper!

This was the second one that Conor caught:

Conor has definitely caught the fishing bug. When he’s not teaching sailing at the boat club or working at Mullaney’s you can find him fishing. He loves it. He goes with his friends up to Minot.
The Magic of Scituate
If you’re new around here, than you may not know this. When Luke and I were first married we were living in London and we visited my parents’ home in Scituate during Heritage Days weekend. We came for two weeks, I think. On the last day, Luke went out on a neighbor’s boat and he caught a striped bass and we enjoyed it for dinner that evening.
On the way back to London, Luke asked me why we weren’t living by the ocean. Why were we living in London when we both loved the water? He wanted to be able to enjoy the ocean as he had in Cornwall when he was growing up.

Before we knew it, we were making arrangements for a green card and a move to the US so we could enjoy living by the water. This was our dream for our boys’ to grow up in Scituate. This day of fishing, of catching striped bass, was a full circle moment for us.
We joked with our friends that these striped bass are what made us move here, but it’s so true. We are so grateful to live in such a spectacular town with wonderful people, wonderful neighbors, and wonderful friends. Winters are rough here but summers make it worth it.
If you get up to fishing this 4th of July weekend, we hope you catch many keepers! Happy 4th of July!

Wow nice fish! I am thinking you live on Cape Cod. I enjoy your blog. I live up here in NE Ohio but visit my son and family on the Cape.
Hi Rory, We actually don’t live on the Cape. We live on Boston’s South Shore which is between Boston and Cape Cod, although our town is very reminiscent of the Cape. It’s a pretty magical place. I hope you enjoy your next visit with your son and family on the Cape. xx
Oh Danielle, what a beautiful story about a beautiful town and lucky family that gets to live in Scituate. You know it’s my favorite place in the world. I’m really missing my Scituate summers today.
Hi Tricia, I’m thinking of you and your family. I know Scituate holds so many special memories for you. It really sparkled this weekend and the Carnival is starting tomorrow in the harbor. Sending love from Scituate! Danielle xx
