Are You Ready for Irene?

The calm before the storm, Saturday morning.

Saturday morning, 8:30am. Taking Poppy for a walk, probably her last before Hurricane Irene hits.  Lots of other dogs and people out walking too.  The sea is very calm.  Hardly moving.  The air is heavy.  Humid air and clouds are rolling in.  How bad will this storm be?  We’ve taken some precautions.  Stocked up on water, batteries, bread and candles.  This will be Luke’s first hurricane in America (we moved over from England 7 years ago).  Our boys and dog’s first hurricane, too.  Our first one in our house in Scituate.  This morning we are running last minute errands before we batten down the hatches…

Minot, Saturday morning before the storm.

Saturday at 10am.  At the dump to get rid of the sad TV that died last week.  I’ve never seen the transfer station in Scituate so busy.  The line is out into the street.  I guess people are getting rid of anything that can blow.

Saturday.  Afternoon at Ikea to stock up on candles.  Lots and lots of candles.  Also, filled the boys bellies with Swedish meatballs.

Saturday. 3pm the rains have started in Scituate.  Homes have been boarded up and all of us on the Irish Riviera are getting ready for Irene’s arrival.

“Don’t Give Up the Ship” Scituate residents on First Cliff are facing Hurricane Irene with a sense of humor and some life preservers.
Saturday, 4pm.  Here comes the rain.  It is pouring and there is a strong smell of seaweed in the air.  Heading home to batten down the hatches.
Rain on the sun roof (sun where are you?)

Fingers crossed that we don’t get hit too hard tonight.  Pot of Turkey chili on the hob and thinking of family and friends here on the East Coast.  Stay safe everyone! x
