Satuit Boat Club (Cozy Living)

Every Friday night, we pack beach towels & a cooler, and watch the sun set over Scituate Harbor enjoy time at Satuit Boat Club.

Satuit Boat Club - Finding Silver Pennies

“I really don’t know why it is that all of us are so committed to the sea, except I think it’s because in addition to the fact that the sea changes, and the light changes, and ships change, it’s because we all came from the sea. And it is an interesting biological fact that all of us have in our veins the exact same percentage of salt in our blood that exists in the ocean, and, therefore, we have salt in our blood, in our sweat, in our tears. We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea – whether it is to sail or to watch it – we are going back from whence we came.”

– John F. Kennedy

I’ve always LOVED that quote from JFK and I find it to be so true.

Summer Evenings and Scituate Harbor - Finding Silver Pennies

Whether we’re swimming in the sea, sailing on a boat, or sitting on the shore looking at the harbor a sense of calm comes over us. I swear our little boys have a larger proportion saltwater in their veins than most people.

I thought sharing this part of our lives, our lives by the sea, would be perfect for the Cozy Living Series hosted by friend Jennifer over at Town and Country Living.

Apart from our home, by the sea is where I feel the most at peace and cozy. We are new members to the Satuit Boat Club, we joined this year after Conor loved doing his first season of sailing last summer. The club was founded in 1944 and is a no frills boat club filled with lovely members, young families, retired couples, and so many different levels of boating interests.

Cozy Living, an evening with our family at Satuit Boat Club - Finding Silver Pennies

They hold an annual opening brunch on the lawn and have a few movie nights with fresh popped popcorn and refreshments. I shared on Monday that our boys are doing sailing there a few days a week, you can see that post here. Conor is learning to sail Opti and John is learning 420s. In fact, Luke and I, are doing adult sailing one night a week, too.

Making vodka sodas while enjoying harbor views - Finding Silver Pennies

We bring stuff to mix our own vodka sodas and the kids sip homemade soda. John makes his famous guacamole and we feast on tortilla chips, salad, and burgers.

Treasure hunting on Scituate Harbor - Finding Silver Pennies

Our kids enjoy exploring on the beach while we get dinner ready. If you look closely you can see John on the left of this photo.

We play ball or corn hole and chat with other families.

Really I can’t think of a better way to spend a Friday evening.

Okay, now I’ll let the photos do the talking:

When we discussed joining I didn’t really realize how much we would love it at the boat club. Luke helped out in the spring repairing docks and I gave the kitchen cabinets a fresh coat of paint.

We will always cherish nights like this.

As the sun goes down, a rainbow of soft sherbet colors fill the sky.

So tranquil.

On this particular night, we brought graham crackers, marshmallows, and chocolate bars to make s’mores.

Our boys are constantly in motion.

Except when toasting marshmallows and when they go to sleep. Then they are tired from all the exploring and sailing by the sea.

As we were leaving we noticed how beautiful the moon looked above the water.

I hope you enjoyed this glimpse of our life by the sea. We feel truly blessed to have this a short walk from our home.

What an amazing place to live, you are quite right to cherish every moment – time passes so quickly. I would love to live by the sea now having just spent a week on the Northumberland coast here in the UK where we are experiencing a really hot spell! They are starting to compare it to 1976 which I remember well – I was carrying my third son and we had weeks and weeks of incredibly hot weather. I don’t want it to last that long otherwise we will be getting our water from standpipes in the road again!! Enjoy… Read more »

Scituate truly is heaven on earth. Danielle, you have no idea how much your blog brings back so many of my wonderful memories. My favorite memory of our Friday night (or maybe it was Saturday) was going to the Sand Hills Beach Club to watch cartoons and get Hoodsie ice creams. Nobody in our family belonged to the boat club but we did love to peak through the fence and see the pool and think about the lucky people that got to swim there. I heard many years later that one of my brothers used to jump the fence and… Read more »

LOVLEY! When our children were small we were members of a tennis club. Our children spent hours in the pool in the summer. Memories like that are the best.

Jennifer @ Town and Country Living

Danielle, you really do lead a charmed life. It would be so much fun to belong to a boat club out east. How nice it must be to have a home within walking distance of the sea. Love your pictures!

Danielle, We may not live near the ocean, but we do live close to Lake Michigan. Reading this and seeing your photos reminded me how much we loved sailing and raising our children on our 30′ sailboat and the yacht club we belonged to. We gave it all up years ago when our kids became teenagers and started delivering newspapers in our neighborhood. We miss those days, and all I can say is for you to enjoy these moments with your children while they are still young enough.

This is such a beautiful way to spend summer nights and time together. I think it’s so cool that you each are learning to sail. That’s something that you kids can take with them as they grow. Your photos are such a gorgeous look into your evenings. Have a lovely summer on the water, the best place to spend it in my opinion!

Your article was wry calming and also inspirational. I’ve always wanted to go to the east coast. I grew up in Hawaii but I want to see the other side of our beautiful USA. One day i hope to.
