Finding Silver Pennies

My Favorite Blue and White Decorating Ideas for Summer

Blue and white is classic, coastal, and relaxed. It’s my favorite color combination and I wanted to share my favorite blue and white decorating ideas for summer!

I tried to come up with a new color scheme but blue and white is timeless. I can’t help being drawn to those colors together. I’m drawn to ticking stripe pillows, flow blue pottery and gorgeous blue bottles. Every time I’m at a yard sale or shop, my eye is always drawn to blue and white. Most of our home is decorated in some form of this color scheme.

My good friend Jennifer, is hosting a blog hop this week – the Summer Colors Home Tour.

I guess it’s no big surprise that my colors are Blue and White.

Blue and White Trim

One of the first things I did when moving into our home was paint the trim a crisp white and add blue shutters and doors to our home’s exterior. This color combination is so happy and pops against the weathered cedar shingles.

The door and shutter color is Benjamin Moore’s Buxton Blue in high gloss. It really is a happy blue. So many people have asked us for the color.

DIY Your Own Blue and White Shibori

DIY Shibori

Shibori is an ancient Japanese method that uses resist dyeing techniques to form patterns on fabric. The earliest known example dates from the 8th century. Often indigo was used or red madder. We enjoyed creating our own shibori designs from shirts to placemats to pillows.

Outdoor Rugs in Blue and White

I use a lot of indoor outdoor rugs for our seaside home. They are durable and virtually indestructible. The one on our deck lasted 3 years.

Trellis Indoor Outdoor Rug – Deck Refresh

This outdoor rug, gave a pretty pop of color and also covered up our splittery deck. Eventually, we’ll need to replace the deck but for now outdoor rugs make the space feel fresh.

Striped Rug in the She Shed

This pale blue and white rug, makes a statement in my shiplapped shed. This rug looks as good as the day we placed it in here!

Navy Blue and Tan Outdoor Rug

Summer in our sunroom is made even nicer by a lovely rug from Ikea! This hasn’t faded and we’ve had it for 4 years.

Durable Pappelina Rugs in Our Kitchen

Can you believe the rugs in our kitchen are woven plastic? They are so durable and can be washed in the washing machine. The pops of blue and white are perfect for our seaside kitchen with kids and dogs.

Decorating with Blue Glass

A Collection of Shells and an Old Soda Bottle

All over my home you’ll find glass in the prettiest shade of blue. That pale blue that reminds you of shards of sea glass or tropical waters.

The white slipcovered sofa compliments our coastal living room.

Giant fish floats are also a favorite. I have them placed in various rooms. I also love this giant clam shell. It’s had various things from glass to succulents planted inside.

DIY Sunprints

Sunprints are a lovely way to add indigo and white to your home’s interior and are so fun to make. I shared a tutorial the other week.

They are so pretty and look so welcoming in our entryway.

Blue and White Bedding

Freshening up bedding for summer is another fun way to celebrate the arrival of summer. I bet you can’t guess what I recommend for sheets! Yup, blue and white.

I also love to add gorgeous branches for a summery feel.

Flow Blue

I’m obsessed with flow blue pottery. You can often find great pieces at thrift stores. I actually found this one for $16.

DIY Paper Flowers

Paper flowers or real flowers look so pretty in here for summer.

DIY Cedar Door Mat

I shared this little mat yesterday and it’s the perfect way to add a pop of blue into outdoor decor.

DIY Coastal Doormat

A little blue chalk paint and your whale and mat are ready to celebrate summer in blue and white!

Blue and White Painted Furniture

Speaking of paint, why not update a yard sale find with some! This little blue and white cabinet in our dining room only cost me $20, but I love updating it with the seasons.

Here’s another painted piece in my boys’ bedroom. I did a Union Jack flag on it in honor of their English heritage:

I still need to share some updated photos of their room with you, but I will soon. You can see the room makeover here and here.

They also have one other blue and white painted piece in their room:

A chest we found at the dump. You can see the makeover here. The sail cloth pillow is from Martha’s Vineyard and the others are from Land of Nod.

Saltwash Scalloped Bench

We custom built this bench and gave it a finish with azure paint and some saltwash mixed with white paint and water for a sea sprayed look.

Slipcovers and Blue Accents

Dining Room Makeover

Last year we refreshed our dining room with a pine farmhouse table, my husband built, and affordable slipcovered chairs from Ikea. The covers slip off easily to be washed. I love adding blue and white decor, from these pretty place mats to our blue and white rug.

I hope this gave you a few ideas for using blue and white in your home. I can’t seem to get enough in our home.
