The lilacs are in full bloom and perfect for clipping and bringing inside. Learn to create this fragrant lilac mantel.

Ever since I was a little girl I’ve loved the fragrance of lilacs. My grandmother had beautiful old lilac bushes in a deep purple and lighter lilac color. They always towered over the back part of her yard. I loved them. Every time I smell them I think of her. I’m so excited to share my fragrant lilac mantel with you today!

Foraging for Home Decor

I say foraging but I’m foraging in my own yard!

About 5 years ago I planted two lilac bushes I found at WholeFoods – I think they were $20 each and I told Luke they could be for our anniversary. These lilacs actually bloom the whole summer.

Well, I’m delighted to share these lilac bushes have grown so big:

They’re as tall as me!!!!! I haven’t clipped more than a few flowers from them in the past because I wanted to be able to enjoy them out by our pool but this year we have more than enough to bring inside!

I brought my galvanized tray out and clipped a bunch.

special tip – place them in water immediately so they don’t start to wilt.

Mixing in vintage elements

I thought it was only appropriate to place some of these lilacs in Maas’ (my grandmother) old pewter pitcher.

I stuck with silvers and pewter for this summer mantel.

The glass bottle was actually an oil diffuser from Target that I cleaned out and reused.

Our mantel is refaced with fossilized ocean floor and you can read more about that and our gas fireplace makeover here.

The pewter, silver, and driftwood all pick up the colors of the fireplace.

The faux Lily of the Valley is in an old Harvard trophy. You can read more about that here.

I wish you could smell these beautiful lilacs because it’s heavenly in our living room right now.
