How We Lost 18 Pounds in 10 Days

Happy Friday, Guys! I wanted to pop in and give you an update on our 10 Day Detox. I know I only mentioned it briefly in blog posts saying we were doing it, as I didn’t know if we’d have success. Well, we did on so many levels.

How We Lost 18 Pounds in 10 Days

Say What?!?

I feel like I’m hearing  a record screech.

Luke and I just did a 10 Day Detox and we lost 18 pounds between us.

I am as surprised as you!

So let me back up. Two years ago we did the Whole30 and LOVED it and did it twice and had great results, click here to read about that. We were feeling great and then we went to Spain and had sangria, and paella and tapas (as you do) and we didn’t really quite go back on the Whole30 but we dabbled with paleo and not drinking during the week. Over the holidays we super overindulged, which I shared here. I don’t want to say it was ALL the over indulging at Christmas either. For quite some time, leading up to this I haven’t felt great. I’ve been tired, bloated and my mind felt hazy all the time. In May, I’ll be 40 and I want to be in the best health possible.

10 Days ago I was at my heaviest weight.

Ever.

People kept rolling their eyes when I said I was heavy or wanted to lose weight because they couldn’t see it.

The thing is I could. Many of my clothes were getting too tight, I also felt bloated around my middle and I was constantly tired. I think I was drink 6 cups of coffee a day and still didn’t feel alert. I thought my cause was hopeless. I go to yoga most days and I walk the dogs for about an hour and half every day. I couldn’t figure out why I didn’t feel better or couldn’t slim down.

The answer: I was eating the wrong stuff even though I thought it was healthy.

I love Marie Forleo and I was listening to her interview with Dr. Mark Hyman. You can see the video here:

The thing that he said in this interview which hit a nerve and made me want to try this, “You’re closer to a healthy life than you think.” He also talks about thinking about the body as a whole system not just little parts. His 10 Day Detox treats the WHOLE body. I told Luke about it. We thought it’s only 10 days why not just try it?

He also was featured in the wonderful movie Fed Up which talks about America’s addiction to sugar and how it’s in most of the food we eat and we don’t even realize it.

I knew from the Whole30 that sugar is toxic, that it poisons our bodies and makes us have cravings. Luke and I were both addicted to sugar and it made our whole body out of whack.

So before we started on this little plan. I got a few things. I’m including affiliate links for your convenience.

We got a scale, a tape measure and I borrowed Dr. Hyman’s book from the library, I thought that was the best way to try it.

This is the 10 Day Detox book, it has a daily plan, inspiration quotes and recipes. I’ve since ordered a copy for ourselves.

10 Day Detox Diet by Mark Hyman

He writes in  a very conversational tone and this book is easy to follow. The food was AMAZING! Breakfast is a smoothie, lunch is salad or soup with protein and dinner is usually fish or chicken or turkey with vegetables. Sounds bland, right?

Nope.

Our taste buds didn’t even know we were on a detox. We cooked with fresh herbs, organic meats, enjoyed almond milk, tried coconut butter for the first time along with some exotic spices.

Some favorite meals included: Bok Choy Salad with Raw Almonds, Coconut Curry with Fish, Delicious Tahini Sauce with Veggies, Chicken with Ratatouille.

Our favorite dinner was the Asian Chicken Skewers.

I think our favorite lunch were these turkey tacos:

We actually had them a few times for lunch! Including, yesterday.

Anyway, the meal plan enabled us to do two things: It gave us something to follow so I didn’t have to scratch my head and think, “Oh, gosh, we don’t have anything let me heat up some pasta or something loaded with carbs or get takeaway. It also enabled me to make time to cook with Luke. It reawakened our joy for cooking together as a family.

Luke and I both did this detox and within a day or two we were feeling so great. We had loads of more energy, we weren’t hungry and we were enjoying really great food. Each day we’d have lost another pound.

I no longer feel bloated or tired and my mind is clear.

We both just feel lighter.

We got on the scale yesterday morning and were both surprised. After ten days, Luke lost 11 pounds and I lost 7. I lost 4″ from my waist, 3 1/2″ from my thighs and my hips remained the same.

You guys my clothes are no longer tight and I feel like a whole new person.

We’ve decided to continue on with this plan and purchased Dr. Hyman’s Cookbook:

I made chili from it during the snow storm for dinner and I LOVE the chocolate smoothie in here for a sweet breakfast.

So what does all this mean?

It means Luke and I won’t be drinking alcohol, eating carbs or sugar but it means we’ve reclaimed our bodies and our lives. There are so many health problems in our families that we’re hoping we can avoid with eating clean, with being more conscious of what we’re putting in our mouths.

Do you think you could give this 10 Day Detox a try?

If you do try this plan, I have a few tips I wanted to share:

Success Tips for your own Detox

  • Having a support system. Tell your friends and family what you’re doing. I don’t think we would have been successful if we both weren’t doing the plan. If I saw Luke having a glass of wine I would definitely be tempted.
  • Take photos before you start your detox and after on the morning of Day 11. I put them side by side in picmonkey and already in 10 days could see such a huge difference.
  • Dr. Hyman encourages you to keep a journal. This was important to track stats but also to track moods.
  • Try new things. You just might like them.
  • Oh, and the PGX supplement was HUGE to controlling our hunger.
  • Drink lots of water.
  • Move your body. Go for walks, yoga, runs or whatever you like to do.
  • Double check this plan and supplements with your doctor before beginning.

I hope you’ll think about it. It’s made such a huge difference to us.

Losing weight is great but having all this energy and feeling 100 percent better is even more amazing. I’m really surprised that it only took 10 days to change so much.

I did the whole 30 and I know the feeling of energy. I loved that feeling. I have since had surgery and I am so slow right now. I have such great intentions, and then I just want to sit in the recliner. I am getting out to visit my sister this weekend – I have to travel 3 hrs and this is the first time in 6 weeks that I have gone for an overnight visit. I am looking forward to it. Best of luck with your new way of life. I am so happy for you and your… Read more »

Congrats on your healthy goals??? I so agree with all of your eating plans, and try to do the same. I used to not go a day without chocolate, but stopped that habit, and have happily noticed, that I no longer crave it, as intensely as I used to! Still have something sweet, maybe every 2 weeks, though?
You 2 keep up the great work??

i just did this too after seeing it on marie forleo’s website! if anyone has any doubts, i can attest that both my foggy brain and thoughts that i had just forever lost the ability to feel youthful energy have disappeared. i feel so energized and able to do tough workouts and tackle stuff all day long. i also slept like a lamb the whole time, especially thanks to the prescribed baths and lack of alcohol.

Good for you, Danielle! And congrats to your husband, as well. You’re so smart to walk the path of clean eating together. If you’re looking for another documentary, Sugar Coated is a good one … but warning … you’ll never look at our government the same way. Cheers to taking charge of your health. 😀

Congratulations to you and your husband! I will be checking this book out of our local library to learn more about this detox. My family and I love many of the Whole 30 recipes…cooking with all of the herbs and natural seasonings makes the food so flavorful. For me, planning and organization is key. Thank you so much for sharing! Best wishes for continued success!
