Putting the Paint Brush Down

Many people think I paint everything.  Yes. I do paint quite a lot of things – dressers, tables, pumpkins, mason jars, beds, oars.

BUT….

There are some things I don’t paint.  Some things are meant to be left untouched.

Like this new piece in our entry way:

Deep Wood and Marble

My friend Dan at Gentleman & Daughter Antiques found this amazing piece for me!  It is just gorgeous and fits so well with our dark woodwork.

Victorian Dresser

So I think you’ll understand that I’ll be putting the paint brush down for this one!  This piece dates from the late Victorian period.  Dan thought 1880s or 90s.  He found it at a lovely home in Duxbury, right on the water.

I’m in love with the many colors of the wood and the gorgeous pulls. You know how I feel about hardware (I like it better than jewelry – my mom will probably die when she reads this).

original brass pulls

It isn’t perfect.  There are some scratches and missing veneer.  But I think that adds to the patina and it isn’t too damaged.

1800s Dresser

There are few spots on the marble, but that doesn’t bother me either.

Marble Top

I’ve displayed some old books, a fabric pumpkin and some chestnuts I found out walking Poppy.

Fabric Pumpkin and books

And a $5 blue and white dish I couldn’t resist at the thrift store…

Blue and White China

What can I say? It was calling my name 🙂

This has nice deep drawers that slide easily.  Thought they would be perfect for all our scarves, sweaters and hats once winter arrives.

1920s Entry

I will show you the entire entry (eventually) just have some fall tidying to do!

This is the area right as you enter our home.  Straight ahead is the kitchen and to the right is the living room.

Late Victorian Dresser

As soon as I’ve tidied up I’ll do a little reveal of the front hall for autumn.

I had a fabulous time with the girls up in Canada at BlogPodium, but have been so busy with projects in the basement and things with the boys that I still have to go through my photos.  I’ll share some highlights on Friday!

Thank goodness! While some furniture looks better painted, I love wood and hate to see beautifully detailed old pieces get painted. I cringed when I saw my mother’s dining room furniture painted by one blogger. She removed the carved details and modernized the hardware on two pieces that were at least 100 years old. Some furniture is lovelier as is.

Wow, I have almost the same piece! Marble top, but instead of 3 drawers on bottom, it has 2 doors. Mine is in the exact same place in the hallway with the lamp even on the left side. And yes, it now holds the hats, gloves, and scarves. I had originally bought this to use as a TV stand. I had the VCR and cable box on the shelves within the cabinet. I left the outside alone, just refinished it. But since the doors were open most of the time, I did paint the inside of the cabinet.

Actually Danielle, I am not sure that the pieces on the blog were my mother’s but they were the same as hers, and I have never seen them in anyone else’s home. They were in the house when my parents bought it in 1959 and belonged to the original owners. Their daughter lived across the street and she remembered them all of her life.

Oh it’s such a pretty, charming piece, I can see why you left just as it was!

Not that anybody asked me but I certainly concur, your new piece is meant to be as it is. Much too beautiful and historic to paint over any of it. The flaws, dents, scratches are meant to be appreciated for the life it has had. How extremely lucky you are to own a piece such as this one. Enjoy it for it’s previous life. How delightful. I’m sure you appreciate this piece as it is.
I’m quite envious of your possession of this outstanding piece. Tuff huh? lol

I love this piece, the history behind it is amazing! While I love painting as much as the next gal it’s great to know when a piece doesn’t need it! Can’t wait to see the whole entry!

That is gorgeous! I have a few pieces that my great-grandfather made that will never see paint. It’s just the way it is!

I agree, sometimes its better not paint. The wood grain is nice. Great the way it is.
