Dining Room Update

Hi Friends!  Happy Friday!

Wow!  It has been such a busy week between spending time with the kids, dentist appointments, furniture makeovers and trying to get more done with the dining room…and I’m so sorry to be posting later than usual today.

Progress is being made in the dining room.

As you know, I’m loving the white walls and the furniture has been painted.  I shared with you some tips on staining earlier this week and you can see the finished results on the table above.  The chairs have all been painted and waxed with Chalk Paint ® in Old White.  Love how this is looking.  The chairs look so much better in white than the pink and yellow color they were:

So much better now, right?!?

Simone is still waiting for the room to be completed:

The fabric arrived from Online Fabric Stores yesterday and I can’t wait to reupholster them this weekend.  What do you think of this color:

It is Canvas Spa by Sunbrella.  Love it!  It picks up colors on the antique dresser, inside the hutch and shades of the oriental.  I decided on Sunbrella fabric because of my little guys eating in the dining room –  the food doesn’t always make it into their mouths.

We’ve hung curtains this week and they look a-maz-ing.  Can’t wait for you to see them.  But the piece I’m so excited about is this crystal and brass chandelier:

I know you’re not getting the full impression of just how beautiful this one is because it is in cardboard box.  Sigh.  She really is a beauty.  I found her at a local antique shop – 3A Antiques and knew, just knew she was meant for our dining room.

Can you see the beautiful aged patina?

The crystals sparkle and they are all there!  I can’t wait to see how this looks hanging with the lights on. Fingers crossed this goes up this weekend.

Now, I need your help.  I posted a question about our built in china cabinet on Home Talk but thought I’d ask you all too.  Inside the china cabinet is fabric which the previous owners Velcro-ed up.  Under that fabric is linoleum that looks like tiles.  This doesn’t go with my idea of a French / Shabby Chic dining room.  The linoleum has to go.  Now for your help, what should I do?  Should I take it down and paint it or should I try and paint over it or should I hang a different fabric or wall paper?  What do you think?

Happy Friday!!!! See you all on Sunday for Silver Pennies Sundays!

The linoleum looks like Delft Tiles. I have never seen linoleum like that! I actually like it but that’s not what you wanted to hear, is it? LOL
Loving the chandelier! We just hung all 25 of ours and it has given the house such depth!
Cannot wait to see how the chairs look with their new upholstery. What are you using for the trim?

Danielle I’m so glad you found a chandelier….the one I had would of needed a ton of crystals, a longer chain and wire and some other work. I meant to get back to you about it. Your dining room is really coming together lovely.

Love all the changes! I’m really curious how you got the table edge looking so awesome! I thought it couldn’t be stained? However you did it, it looks amazing! And that chandelier… SO pretty! As for your china cabinet problem. I would say, don’t waste a lot of time trying to tear it out… sometimes the adhesive used for linoleum makes it VERY difficult to remove. I say paint over it. After you remove the velcro of course! 🙂

So, I had all these plans to address the edging but once I got it into the light of day (up from the basement) there didn’t seem to be much contrast to the stained top. It is almost the very same color. So I left it. Easy peasy lemon squeezy!

The table and chairs look amazing, so much better than the original. I love your chandelier, it’s going to look so good over the table. As for the cabinet, I’d do wallpaper or fabric, it might be nice to have a bit of pattern somewhere, in blue of course !

I am in love with the table and chairs, Danielle. What a find those chairs are! Gorgeous.
The chandelier is perfect too and how lucky it had all the crystals. I would do fabric in the cabinet. There’s so many beautiful fabrics out there, I’m sure there is one that would be perfect for it.
Have a great weekend.

It’s all looking good, Danielle! I always recover my kitchen chairs with Sunbrella ~ everything, including mayonnaise, just wipes right off! I am a very fickle decorator. I like to change things up often, so I have always put either wallpaper or fabric behind bookshelves or cabinets. Good luck!

Thanks for the tips, Kim. I’m so glad to hear how easy the sunbrella is to care for. We were able to cover to chairs this weekend and they are looking fab! It sounds like fabric is the way to go for the cabinet. I check and I think it is probably horse hair plaster under the linoleum. Not fun 🙁

I’d be leaning toward fabric or wallpaper on the back of your cabinet. It’s a great place to introduce some pattern into the room. Can’t wait to see your chandy up!

Love the fabric you chose for the chairs. And LOVE the chandelier!!

Love the chandelier! I would use new fabric or wallpaper but leave the existing vinyl on the cabinet. (Who knows? It’s interesting and may come back into style some day.)

Chandelier is gorgeous and love the color of the fabric. Delft tiles are really fabulous – I’ve had friends have me bring back Delft items from Amsterdam every time I travel there. But I agree, not great with what you have going on so far (not my style either)….having said that they could be old. I’d steer clear of painting them and wallpaper or use fabric. You could also protect them by adding a paneling over them (beadboard, etc) and painting the paneling.

Can’t wait to see the reveal!

Thank you so much for the sweet comments! x The Delft tile isn’t real – it is linoleum but I think I may go with fabric as the previous owner has done. I’m looking forward to the reveal myself – chandelier is going up this weekend -got too dark tonight to see what we’re doing and going to finish reupholstering the chairs 🙂
