A Sunny Sunroom & a Mid Century Table (Before & After)

The other week, I had the pleasure of working on a little coffee table for my friend Kerry.  This table was her grandmother’s and she really wanted to use it in her newly renovated home.

Here’s how her table looked when I first saw it:
Black Mid Century Table (Before)
There was nothing wrong with the table.  In a different room the color would have been great but it was a little too black in her light-filled home by the sea. Kerry and I have very similar styles – beachy sea glass colors with stark white trim and warm hued wood floors fill each of her rooms and she is also a lover of blue!
This lovely sunroom is filled with blues and whites so we decided a two tone distress would make this sunny spot, where she enjoys tucking up with a good book, even better.  We thought Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in County Grey with Old White in a two tone distress would be a the way to go.
I first painted the table in Country Grey and then did two coats of Old White.  We didn’t want any of the black paint to show in the newly painted table.  I used one of my favorite distressing methods that I learned from Nancy at the Sea Rose Cottage.  I have used this many, many times and love the natural and subtle effect.  You first apply a thin coat of clear wax all over the area you want to distress then you take your brush (a chip brush works just fine), wet it, and then add a dab of clear wax.  You keep working in one area and let the bristles of the brush and the water wear away the top color.  As you can see here:
Close Up of the Distressing

Once finished distressing, I applied two more coats of clear wax on the top and one coat on the rest of the table.  Here’s how the table looks now:

Mid Century Table (After)
I would apologize for the bright sunshine filling the room, but that is what makes this room Kerry’s oasis.  There is some light distressing on the top and the legs which you can see in the close up shots.

The colors are perfect against her beautiful rug filled with gorgeous cream, periwinkle, light blue, dark blue and green.

The white is perfect. That is a great dip for distressing over black paint. I have a table I may need to do this to someday. Thank you for sharing it at to What We Accomplished Wednesdays. Have a lovely week!

Deborah
