Anyway, when a friend told me about this corner cabinet that she wanted help with I was happy to oblige. It was the only piece of furniture she has from her childhood home and while it may not be expensive it is priceless (holding so many memories of the past).

I first washed the furniture down with mineral spirits, denatured alcohol and then warm water. Luke removed the hook and eye and patched several holes. Knots were shining through which I spot primed with zinser and then I started painting with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Coco. I had never used Coco before - it is a warm gray brown - but have to tell you I love it. I ended up doing three coats on the whole piece. Then Louis Blue was done behind the shelves and on all the detailing. I just love the color combination of the blue and the brown! Then light distressing and two coats of clear wax. Here is the updated corner cabinet:

I love this delicate curve:
My friend also got this sweet little glass knob at Anthropolgie to replace the brass one:
What do you think? Do you have any pieces of furniture from your childhood that you treasure? If so, I'd love to hear about them.

This is awesome! I would love to have a corner cabinet. So jealous...
ReplyDeleteVery nice restoration!!
ReplyDeleteI have a bureau that was in my room when I was a toddler and a credenza from the family living room. Both pieces need a little love but I haven't settled on what to do with them just yet.
Thanks, Ali! Your pieces sound lovely. I agree with you, that it is important to really think about what you want to do before you begin. That's why I haven't done the bedside table in John's room just yet. Still trying to figure it out...
DeleteSo cute! I like the blue details!
ReplyDeleteThe corner cabinet reminds me of my parents kitchen, when I was a child. It just has that lovely simple quality. It looks great - I agree, the blue and brown combination really works.
ReplyDeleteLove your corner cabinet makeover! I'm in the process of doing one very similar, but white. I'm a new follower. Hope you can drop by my blog some time. x Julie
ReplyDeleteThanks, Julie! Just stopped by your blog and love it. I'm following you back :)
DeleteI love the blue and brown together. I have two bookshelves from my childhood that I needed to keep more out of necessity than nostalgia but I went the DIY chalkpaint route with them and I love how much better they look! Here is one of them http://www.chickenscratchny.com/2012/05/another-diy-chalkpaint-bookshelf.html

What a great color combination! I just bought a similar piece on Craigslist yesterday from a couple who is retiring and moving to Arizona. The piece had belonged to the woman's parents and she was sad to see it go. I told her I'd take good care of it. I didn't mention that I was going to paint it, just in case that would freak her out!
ReplyDeletegreat color combo! (i've always been a big fan of blues and browns) i have an old corner cupboard, painted "hunter green" back in the early 90s. thinking it's time for a change! thanks for the inspiration.
ReplyDeleteVery pretty! Love the contrast of the two tones and how the back of the shelves is a different color! The decorations POP in there!
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking up this week!

Absolutely love it!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much!
DeleteSo sweet and I love the COCO color. ASCP is the best. Thanks for linking it up at Doodles & Stitches!
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love ASCP. It is the best!
DeleteI have a similar cabinet only the top of cabinet is scalloped. It is an off white. It was my great aunts. I just love it. I place glass containers of my sea shell finds. My husband thinks it is piece of junk but I love it. I would love to get it appraised someday. I already know it is a treasure no matter what the price.
